No idle on race bikes????

i went to look at a bike yesterday. i started the bike and then rode it around for a while. when i came to a stop and went to put it in neutral it almost died. i had to keep reving the bike to keep it from stalling. i then put it in neutral and killed it. i asked him why it doesnt idle and he told me that there is no reason for the bike to have an idle since its a race bike and the idle just builds up carbon and causes top end power loss. is this true or was he just giving me a line of bs?:think

He's giving you a line of BS...think about it. What difference does it make to let your engine have the capability to idle, since it certainly isn't going to be anywhere near idle speed when you are out there on the track? If you are idling around the track, then I don't think carbon build-up and top end power loss are too much of a concern to you.

I find an idle to be useful, it keeps the engine fom stalling.:think

He is full of it. Every race bike I have owned(97YZ80,125,01YZ250F, and coming soon 02YZ125) has had an idle and has caused me no problems of powerloss or anything else. I find an idle very usefull too, I took my idle off my old bike (97yz125), and put it right back on because it made it much harder to stall with an idle.

When someone's bike won't idle, and they tell you "it performs better that way", or "it prevents carbon buildup and spooge", what they are really telling you is "I don't know how to jet properly to get it to idle cleanly".

not to argue but he told me that his mechanic set the bike up for this. he raced professionally as an independant and said this is how he likes his bikes. if you have an idle then when the bike idles the carbon builds up easier. also he said since its a race bike you dont need an idle but he can adjust it yo mek it idle if i want him too. however my original uestion was ment to be to the effect of, has anyone heard of this before and what are the advantages/disadvantages of it.:think

Some riders prefer not to idle for the engine break. I cant tell a difference on my cr250 in the way in performs, idle or not. Who sits and lets it idle for long anyway?
Buildup? I dont think so.
I think its just a preference of the rider.

Get the guy to set the idle for you.

Me? I like an idle, prefer to spend more time riding and less time kicking.
My son (8) and I ride the woods a lot and I have to stop and let him catch up, thats why I like an idle

I've been told that you get a bit crisper throttle response if you have the carb set to not quite idle.

mxracer724, just curious, how do you know that the '02 YZ125 that you don't have yet idles normally?

That only applies to some older model Keihin carbs. Something about the design of the choke/idle circuits.

In the Uk we anrnt meant to have an idle-the idea is if you fall off and the bikes in gear it will stall and not have a rotating wheel to shove your hand in.:scream:
