jumping tec.

hi, im riding/learning on a kx 250

At the track at my house i learned backwards i guess from searches i have dont on this forum. I learned to let off before the jump and just coast off, sometimes "seat-hoping" only i wouldent sit on the seat i would just push the suspension down at just the right time (you know what im talkin about) kinda like bunny-hopping a bicycle . Now i power off the face. One day i just decided to learn how to power off the face. Now im using a lower gear for everything and it seems easier and i have more control to tell you the truth. Now that im using a lower gear my dad who also rides a 250 but just coasts off of olmost everyjump is a lil faster then i am.
heres my question
-But cant i just switch up a gear while still using the "power off face" and leave him in the dust? I would go out and try this but its winter and i havent rode in probly a few weeks and the future doesnt look to bright for riding conditions. I also would like to hear some opinions from guys who have been racing considering im young/dumb and have never raced.

If I were you I would just practice what ever jumps your doing and try different tchniecs. The more time you get to spend riding it will start to come natural for what you need to do on different jumps. You should not limit your self because you havent been riding in a couple weeks take it from me, I broke my wrist on my 80 about four mounths ago its only been my second time out riding when I won my first 125a race at the winter combat serries in Colorado so you should not limit you self if you havent been riding in a few weeks.

Don't worry about trying to be faster over the jumps. The real difference in speed is in the turns, particularly entering and going through them. Once out anybody can point it straight and twist the throttle.

For the jumps just concentrate on bike control and landing where and how you want to.

Thanks. i knew i could count on you guys.
My track is mostoly flat track turns with little ruts made from spinning the back tire in the same place over and over on the flat turns.Also one giant sweeping berm. How do you take a big berm fast? Most of the time it is dry concrete hard-pack

To take the big bermed corners fast this is what I do. Come into the corners hard and move your butt up to the front of the seat as you are coming up on the corner. I also lean my upper body toward the back of the bike a little. As you start to lean the bike over for a corner (the more you can lean on a banked corner the more speed you're going to carry) and weight the outside peg. This will be easier to do if you pull the inside foot off and stretch it toward the front lower fork leg. That foot will also help if you start to tip over. Then when you are in the middle of the corner work on getting back on the gas. The berm should help keep your wheel in place as you accelerate.
