Tire pressure?

My manual (clymer) says to use 19psi of pressure in my tires F/R. However, my bike slides alot. Could I lower my pressure to 12psi without any adverse effects (pinch flatting, bead popping off the rim) and still be ok?
Thanks, Bob

19 psi is actually pretty high pressure for your tires and is not really ideal for motocross. You may run that high if you are trail riding because the extra pressure helps protect against pinching the tube and punctures when coming in contact with rocks and logs. But for motocross you will typically run your tire pressure between 10-15psi. You want to run a higher pressure on hard pack and a softer pressure in loam or sandy conditions. In the hard pack conditions out in California I run 12 psi in the front and 13 psi in the rear.

Check out this article it has some good basic info: http://www.transworldmotocross.com/...1563748,00.html

Thanks JST. I ride on mostly sand here in florida, but there is the occasional rocky section.

19 psi is high. My Maxxis tires have fairly stiff sidewalls, I run 12 psi front and 10 psi rear in the rocks. On less rocky trails I'll go 10/8 f/r.

Are you using "soft" or "sand" specific tires? Soft sand takes an aggressive tire to plow through the surface and not fill up. The result of using a tire with small or closely spaced knobs (hard terrain spec) will be sliding around a lot.
