handguards

I'm about to buy a 2001 KTM 300 EXC. Does anyone make good handguards that mount on the stock triple clamp?

Thx,

If you have a KTM you have to have Enduro Engineering.

Dan-To the best of my knowledge, there aren't any handguards that will mount to the stock triple clamps on the kTm's. Enduro Engineering and Cycra both make excellent handguards (They are very similar to each other) and they each have the specific mount for whichever type of bars you have. I am running the Cycra Pro-Bends on Pro-Taper bars. Installation was a snap with no bending involved. If you go with the Cycra's, call Jeff at MXSouth (Click the MXS logo to the left) and tell him you are with DRN. The EE's would be a great choice as well. The only option for triple-clamp mount handguards is to replace the top clamp. I wasn't ready to drop that much cash! Good luck.

BTW-Click "My Gallery" in my post here and there are a couple pictures with the Cycra's on if you want to check it out.

CO Dan -

I have the Rally Pro's on both my bike and my wife's bike. They look great, but the do not stay in place. One small dump and they are all over the place. I think the bar end mounting system on the Rally Pro's is not the best idea. They are very hard to get tight and the bar mount is not great.

I will definitely go with the EE or the Cycra next time. Everyone I have talked and have seen with both of these really likes them.

One good thing about the Cycra Pro Bend it gets the end way from the outside of your hand which give you a little more room to grip the bars correctly.

I have never had the problem with my Acerbis Pro Rally guards moving all over the place and I have them on three bikes. I have dumped my KTM250 and they have saved my levers many of times.

I have to agree with Badgas. The Rally Pro mounting system is flawed. I have them mounted on two KTMs, both with Pro-Taper bars, and I'm constantly having to re-tighten the guards, even when we don't crash. The lower clamps do not fit on the straight section of the Pro-Tapers without bendiing the guard a good deal, and even then, the clamps do not sit securely. Then, the two-bolt clamps do not tighten enough to hold the guards firmly. If you try to get them tight enough, you will strip out the aluminum threads in the clamps. Larger diamer bolts or a four-bolt system are needed. Also, the bar-end clamps will not hold tightly enough to prevent rotation.

All that being said, the guards are way better than nothing. They've saved me dozens of broken levers and a few broken hands, I'm sure. But when I buy my next set of guards, they're going to be a different brand, unless Acerbis redesigns the Rally Pros.

AFAIK, BigLou is right on. Since the pinch bolts are in back, there are no triple clamp mounted inner BB mount options. Shame, too. That is THE way to go. I have the Scott's 18mm offset clamps on mine with the Cycra inner triple clamp mounts. The BB's simply can not rotate anymore. End of problem.

There was a place that made some sort of one piece inner mount that used the odo bolts to hold it on. I tried chasing that down a while back but all I heard was that they were re-designing it.

I've used the EE, Moose, Cycra and Acerbis mounts on my protaper type bars in the past. All will rotate easily in my experience. I have 2 sets of Cycra probends and don't like them. Dust collectors now. They let small branches and saplings hit your outside fingers in the really tight woods. Hurt like heck! Plus the bend will bend in a solid impact. I've seen it happen.

If you want to spend some money, check out emig racing. They have a top triple clamp that has a mounting system for handguards! I wish I had the money for it, it looks like a SWEET unit. Actuall you can check it out on this message board under "just tested" I believe. They truly are works of art.
