need to get a big bike

Hello all,

I am on a stock kx100 at the moment, and I feel the need for more power (as everyone does). I am thinking screw the 125 class. I dont race, I have no plans to, and If I really have the urge, I can race 250 or open. I have been looking at cr250s currently. More specifically a brand new 04 model for $4500 ! I think this may be a good choice for my riding style. I ride in tight woods with steep rocky twisty trails. I want something that I can jump as well, because I am thinking about building a small most likely tight mx track. So I need something with low end grunt. The thing about the 450 4 strokes is that they are a lot of money. I would like to buy a new bike so I don't "inherit someone else's problem." I have about 6 years experiance so I am not a beginner. I am 115 lbs, and 5 foot six.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Are you sure you don't want a 125 or 250F? Even with a 450, my 210 lb butt often loses drag races to riders your size on 125s and 250Fs. It sounds like you could handle a 250 fine, but the cornering and braking advantage on a 125 or 250F might outweigh the power deficit.

I dont really thing I want to bother with that class. I will upgrade out in about a year or two anyway. I am thinking I might just get a bike that I could ride for a while.

thanks for the reply

Ok, which are you going to be riding MORE? The CR250 is probably not going to be as much fun on the tight rocky trails without a bit of modification (suspension, flywheel weight).

KDX200/220 and KTM200/250 are also options to consider. You'll even see them out riding MX once in awhile. If you're not planning to race, you may be happier with a bike that's more woods-oriented to start with.

I have ridden the kdx, in fact, my dad has one. It is kind of under-suspended, and the power has a huge hit down low, but the top end doesnt seem to be much. Nonetheless it is a great bike. The ktm exc's are good as well, just not what I am looking for, and they are pricey. But, I have been also looking at a new 04 yz250 for 4800... I heard they were good, but honda is the cheapest I can find.

My riding style leans more towards mx and just jumps and playing around in general, but the woods will still be in the picture so... 40%woods, 60%track. And maybe more track later on.

thanks for the help!

your gonna get what you pay for. lori's right. but you seem set on buying the honda. you are asking for advise, but yet, you sound close minded on taking it. what mods did dad do to the KDX? springs? gold valves? you want top end? does he have a desert pipe on the KDX? you have many people on the boards here, and they all ride something different. we can all offer you something, but sounds like you want the honda. it will work well for you on the track, but a pig in the woods. sorry if this sounds harsh, but thats the way you sounded to me in the post.
