twisted piston/2004 crf250,40 hours,why?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: ajcrf250---------------------

all required maint. done up to this point. started making noise, took it to dealer, they say $650.00 to repair,i say honda warranty. service told me it looked like someone had already opened up the motor, not true.also,i saw as did they, what looked like engine/vin numbers etched on motor by hand.as far as i know, those numbers are stamped on at the factory.whats going on?does anyone know?

Posted by: ajcrf250---------------------

the numbers i am taking about do not match the ones on my title or warranty

Posted by: James---------------------

All of my CR250Rs have hand etched numbers on the cylinder. I am pretty sure they do that at the factory.

ajcrf250,Did you buy that bike brand new, or from a delership?

A friends shop has seen 4 in the last month all over 30 hours.
The manual states 20hrs(30?) on a top end - sounds like 30 was your number on the crf.
He averages 6 a month of the yzf's and one of his factory rep's mentioned one Yamaha shop with 13 and they were piling up...ouch.

20hrs for a top end on a four stroke? Call me old school, but that just don't sound right.

On a 13,000 rpm single piston ring, slipper skirt , titanium valved race engine it is.

Man I love my XR284!

Rich,

You mean it had nothing to do with him not "flogging" the crap out of the bike during breakin. J/K I think you know where Im coming from.

AJ sorry to hear about the crf.

Posted by: slideways11---------------------

AJ I feel your pain but when the engineers at Honda , Yamha etc tell you to rebuild at 20 hrs believe me they know what they are talking about. I had a shifter cart with a TZ 250 motor in it . Yamaha said the cranks were only good for 7.5 hrs. The one time I tried to get more than 7.5 hrs. out of a crank the motor grenaded.

These are race bikes, not your old style thumpers. When looking at most of these bikes a few things were common - dirty oil and air filter. Ask a pro's mechanic how often the oil and filter is changed/cleaned... not every other ride!
The "new" thumpers have to be maintained perfectly. I change my oil and air filter every ride and oil filter every other ride and I run full synthetic oils.

TT - You know the old saying, "never let the facts get in the way of a good half-assed theory"

I've got 25 hours on mine but am waiting on a rebuild because I know a good chuck of those hours are at or just above idle from doing harescrambles and screwing around in the back yard, not 25 hours of full out racing. Is this a flawed theory??? I haven't had any problems so far except having to lightly shim the left intake 5 hours ago. I need to check it again this weekend but am kinda scared that'll it'll be tight again.

This is a question for Rich for when I do that rebuild. On thumpertalk there was this big discussion on doing a dry reassembly between the piston/cylinder and spinning the motor dry 60 kicks or so before even starting it. This was suppose to get the rings to seat better and reduce the possibility of excessive oil usage What's your opinion on this?? I can find that link if you'd like. Thanks

I assemble a lot of engines every year and they ALL are put together with oil on the cylinder walls, and they always will be.
I don't know any reputable engine builder who would do it any other way.

Posted by: ironworker---------------------

We just got a CRF250X and it has probably 15 hours on the motor, 15 hours of never being out of 3 gear, riding trails at 1/4 throttle with an absolute beginner rider aboard( never even a wheelie)....... @ 30 hours should i be looking at a top end or is this more for riders actually putting the meat to the bike?

oil is changed every ride along with the air cleaner

I'm with you PatMan. I was this close to getting a KX250F until I read this thread. Guess I'll poke along with my KLX a few more years. Doing a suspension rebuild next week. Going all Race Tech.

Posted by: john3_16---------------------

So, you put 40 hours on the bike without a top end job ? What do you mean by all the required maintenance ? A top end job should be done much sooner than 40 hours on a high revving 4 stroke.

Posted by: Studboy---------------------

The new race 4-strokes have a funny way of reminding their owners that they aren't XRs.

What's really frustrating is the problem is not just Honda's, they ALL have problems.

Posted by: Lonewolf---------------------

as much as i love my crf 250r i think i am going to buy a 250 two stroke for next year because of maintenance reasons. i admitt that i am not the most mechanically inclined, i just dont have the confidence to tear into the engine and certainly cant afford to take it to the dealer everytime i need a valve adjustment or a new top end.

Another one to agree -w- Patman!
Makes my BRP look purdier and purdier.
(no its NOT just the beer.......)

Good thing they havent phased out the XR's........yet.

I think the xr 400 and the 250 are on there final year [ 04] they are not listed as 05s, as the rest of the line is. Maby a upgrade is in the future for these bikes we shall see.

Or they are getting renamed the crf400f or crf250f like the smaller XR's did last year.
