KDX200 or KX125

Which one, KDX200 or a KX125 ? Right now I am riding all trails but the trails I ride are full of turns, deep sand and most of the time big whoops. I am thinking of a KDX200 and then doing the normal mods, pipe and so on. Or a 125 and ride it as it were born. I am not racing, only trail riding with the wife and some family but I enjoy a spirited ride. I am riding a XR400 right now and it is a great bike but it is a little heavy and I am getting kind of bored with it. I am not a big fan of the new 4-stroke MX bikes yet. I have heard of to many costly motor problems to want one of those. Also price is a key factor too. A $4000 KDX leaves a lot of room for mods as compared to $5000 or $6000 bike.

Guess my question is, will I be happy with one of the above bikes or will I get bored with it too? I would love a KX250 but I just don't want to spend that kind of cash right now and I am a little afraid that I would try to ride that a little to fast in the trees and get myself hurt.

So what are your thoughts guys? One of the above? Something else out there I should consider? Or should I just keep riding the XR400? Thanks for the help, thinking about this has been making me want to

kdx with a pipe and a new carb. I cant remember if it is the two twenty with the two-hundred carb... Yup, I think that is it. The kdx is a good bike man

Well I have both, a (very modified) KDX200 and a '99 KX125 with a PC pipe. I like both, but both have different mission profiles. With a compliant suspension and an engine that seems to pull from 2 rpm, the KDX is a great woods bike. The KX is very light and has a great suspension so it’s a joy on tracks.

With that said, I don't mind riding the KX in the woods, but I don't like riding the KDX on a track. The KX works well in the woods but can be a challenge on tight technical stuff with varied terrain. The KDX's suspension and weight become a real issue on a track.

They both make about the same peak HP, but the KDX has power everywhere...the KX has to be on the pipe to have any power.

If I could have only one…it would be the KX…no, it would be the KDX…or…

Really, it comes down to where you’ll do 51% or more of your riding. Additionally, if you’re a hard charger in the woods, but only like to play on a MX track, the KDX would be the right bike. The converse applies too.

But if you’re like me and like both woods and MX equally, and find you time split your time equally, then you just might find you have MBD (Multiple Bike Disorder).

having owned a KX125 and currently owning a KDX200 and being a vastly more trail rider than track rider I can reitterate to a tee what Rv6 has to say.

It sounds to me, from what you have said, like the KDX is the way to go.... I enjoy the KDX much more in the woods (but the KX is adequate).... The KDX is MUCH torquier (is that a word?) and is much more at ease on a leisure ride than the KX... but it has the power to ride the toughest trails with ease. It also has a much larger range on a tank of gas

If I had the cash available, I would most likely have to get a bigger garage to get all of the bikes that I would like to have.

All of my riding is in the woods. I just like the trees better than the track. But I like MX bikes just as much as any woods bike. I think that the perfect bike for me would probably be a KTM200 or 300. But the cost of one of those compared to a KDX is a big difference. Guess I will have to look harder into the KDX. Thanks for the opinions.

You know, a KTM200EXC is more expensive, but it doesn't need any mods. You might also be able to pick up a used KDX with all the mods already done for a decent price.

One problem with the ktm, If you break a lever, it costs more to fix than it would on a japanese made bike. (correct me if I am wrong) It has high end parts stock, so high end cost more than mid-low end.

Check the FS forum...I just posted an ad for a sweet used KDX that's modded to the hilt!

well, I just came off a KDX220, and moved to a KTM450. a few of us here have done this. and not one of them can I think of that has expressed his or her veiws of going back. RV6 is right . figure out just what it is you want to ride on, and make your choice. my KDX was loaded,a nd I got a good price for it, but you won't need to do anything but a jet kit to the KTM. just my .02 worth.
