Effective lifespan?--- Bridgestone 402 vs Dunlop 756

From what I understand, the performance is similar, but for how long?

Or am I way off, and one is much better than the other.

I have always run the 756, so I can't compare the two, but I can say that the 756 seems to be the preferred tire for racers because it is the best tire made with the trade-off that it wears like a rubber eraser.

i really like the 756 but i cant afford to used them since they wear so quickly, i ruined a brand new 756 in an hour at a really hard track.

We have a combination of different tires that get used throughout the season, never tried the 402 so can't comment. The 756 is a great tire for race day but one practice day for us will destroy the tire beyond what we would use for the next race. We still run the 756's but it comes off the back as soon as we get home from the track on race day. We can usually get 4 or 5 race days (flipping the tire each change) before we put it into the practice tire pile. If your looking for a long wearing put it on and leave it on tire I would look more into the Michelin M12, Maxxis IT or some other harder compound tires.

Thanks ya'll.

the bridgestones are great IMO!!! the rear hooks up as good as the 756 but i found it lasts longer. as for the front i use the 203? bridgestone- real long lasting tire- the 756 front is good but the knobs are slanted and it goes off real quick.

Posted by: marcusgunby---------------------

756 front washes out badly on wet tracks with a hard base-found that out a few times-i wont ride with them-back are ok but do wear bad-i like the 752-best dunlop made imo.

Posted by: Studboy---------------------

I bought a 756 rear this time instead of the usual M12. I was scared to try a 756 because I've heard about how fast they are supposed to wear. For me, this tire is holding up much better than I expected (much better than the M12). Could it be because I went with a 120 size this time instead of a 110 (or 130...whatever the equiv. michelin is.)?
It doesn't chunck out like the M12, and the rubber height seems to be lasting longer.

I have been running a 756RR front, and they hold up pretty good unless you have to lock up the brake hard on really hardpack stuff...then half of the contacting knobs are gone.

Marcus, what tires do hold OK on wet/extreme hardpack tracks? Ours is like this frequently and it is quite dangerous.

I was thinking that a few studs might do the trick.

Everyone: Info is great. Keep it coming.

bclapham: That's exactly the type of comparison I was looking for.

marcus: I looked for, and couldn't find 752's, though 755 fronts still seem to be available. A buddy of mine liked the 755 for off-road, but that's a different deal altogether.

studboy: I would think a soft-terrain tire with relatively tall, thin, hard compound knobs would dig into hardpack tracks when just watered and real slick. However, once that dries up after about 20 minutes, you're left with the wrong tire on a hard, dry surface.

In Georgia, our motocross tracks as a whole are really well maintained on raceday (I'm talking GPG, Best of Georgia tracks; there are some other very good tracks as well). They start out as sand or loam, and then get beat out by 400 racers and become basically hardpack. I guess that's why a lot of racers around here run intermediate tires. And that's what I'm looking for--a tire that can start decently on dirt or concrete, handle the morning loam decently, and then NOT slide away as the track hardens. Oh, and having some edge left for another race would be nice.

I like the Dunlop 742 front better than any other tire I've tried. I've noticed the taller knobs on the 756 and other tall-profile tires tend to roll over and slide on hard packed and blue groove tracks. For me, the roll is especially noticable on hard jump faces where I'm turning into the face to scrub speed.

I've never found a better rear than a 756. I've gotten decent life out of 739s, but not nearly the hook-up in corners. Most of the tracks I ride are prepped and watered, so I get an acceptable life span out of a 756. Some people like to spend big bucks on bike mods. I get better results riding a relatively stock bike with the fresh tires at all times.

Not many but the 752 is about 50% better-i fall off the bike with the 756 front and i dont on the 752s.

756 with one hardpack ride-LOL not really-its done about 7 hardpack rides.

Posted by: MX-727---------------------

Keep in mind that most of the negative comments about the 756 wear come from hardpack experiences. The 756 is a soft to soft intermediate tire. IMO it is an amazing tire that also works well on hard terrain, but it won't last long, as it wasn't designed for hard terrain.

The 739 gets a bad rap, but it wears long and works very well on hard terrain, which is exactly what it was designed for.

I'm very intrigued by the 742, the new offering for mid-hard to mid-soft.

I will try a 742 next i think-the 752 is becoming hard to find.

Rear tire only:
We have given up entirely on the Dunlops because of wear issues.
As Chili said one practice session at oiur track will destroy and 756.

Our decison was to run the Maxis ITs they wear like iron and hook up as well as any of the others on a broader reach of conditions. Thekid has run the same maxis now for 6 races and we just flipped it yesterday. We do run a different wheel/tire on practice days and even that is holding up pretty well.
another side benefit is that the Maxis IT (when you can find them) are $20-$25 cheaper then the 756s.
I know that on the extremes of track conditions we are gving up some traction but for the vast majority of our tracks they work just great

Posted by: marcusgunby---------------------

heard there hard to fit? the dunlops slip on real easy compared to some brands.

Posted by: oldguy---------------------

Yes the Maxis ITs have very stiff sidewalls and do make mounting much more difficult.

Posted by: bclapham---------------------

dont like them ITs- they are good when the track is watered, but the rear gets a bit skittish when the track dries out and becomes hard packed. but yes, they are the best wearing tire.

the front however, IMO is evil- the worst front ever- it constantly feels like its gonna slide out from under the bike in corners.

Posted by: flyinzuki---------------------

I was always a 755F & 752R user,
I have now upgraded to "mo-betta" on my tires.
I now run 742F & 756R.
The advantages I found were in the corners in all conditions.
I did get more life out of the 752R though.

Posted by: Lonewolf---------------------

i really like the 742 dunlop front, i ride almost all hard pack and it never washes out in turns.
