i just checked my valves for the first time on my crf 250r and i got .010" for both exhaust valves and .004" for both intake valves, are these readings ok? the specs are .011" for the exhaust valves and .005" for the intake valves.

On the small side but yeah, they are in spec. Honda says +/- .001 so your OK. But keep an eye on them, especially the inake.

thanks for responding. if i drop another .001" on both intake and exhaust i should shim them then?

Yes, and when you do shim them, you might want to consider shimming them on the loose side at .012 exhaust and .006 intake. I do this so it gives me a little leeway when the valves tighten up more.
When I first checked my valves, right after I broke in the motor, my valves were WAY out of spec, like .006 for exhaust. After I reshimed them, I checked them a couple months later and both intake and exhaust were right where I left them with clearance.
