Quiet street helmet

Can anyone recommend a quiet street helmet? Do you have to spend $300 plus to get a helmet that does not have lots of wind noise?

I have a Shoei RF-900 (replaced by RF-1000 I think) and it's relatively quiet (and a great helmet), but any helmet is going to be loud at highway speeds unless you are in a quiet zone behind a big windshield. Wind noise at higher speeds is loud enough that it can cause hearing damage over time. I use good foam earplugs and that makes a huge difference in sound and fatigue reduction. Wind noise is tiring! I can also hear anything that needs to be heard.

If you just want a helmet to protect your head in a street crash, pretty much any full-face helmet that is DOT or SNELL rated will work so long as it fits your head properly. IMO spending more than $75-$100 is buying comfort, features, and a higher quality level. I spent over $300 on mine 3 years ago and have no regrets especially after wearing it 12 hours in a day (comfortably). It fits well, has plenty of ventelation, the shields are quick and easy to change (don't have to take the helmet off), and it fits well. I ride when it's hot, cold, dry, wet, etc. and a good helmet has the versatility to adapt to different situations. Try on any helmet you are thinking of buying and wear it for 15 minutes around the store. You'll know when one feels just right (snug).

You can get an HJC, an AC10 or AC 11 for less than some of the top brands and they are quite comparable (so says motorcycle consumer news) and my head. If you know what fits look on ****. If you have a dealer who screwed you over try the helmet on there then order on line and save $100. I got the AC10, last years model, retail $240, for under $90. I've had plenty of pricier ones but this is as good. If you want a Shoei RF900 there a few for sale at www.sierratradingpost.com under motorsports. Hot graphics on a nice helmet for $240.

Just wear earplugs.

Ditto on the foam ear plugs.

I bought a KBC TK9 that I'm very happy with it. It is quieter than my Shoei RF, and it vents better too. The TK9 lists for $180, but can be found for under $140, especially if you buy a left over.

Another helmet consideration is if you wear glasses; I do. When I bought my helmet the cheaper HJC AC-10 fit my head well, but pinched my glasses into my temples badly. The Shoei model had grooves in the liner for glasses and that made the difference as far as comfort. When you try on the right one, you'll know.

I just bought two HJC CL-14 helmets ($114 ea. at tonker.com). I'm very impressed with them. Very quiet and stable. Stop by the house and try one out. I was borrowing a Z1R helmet from the guy I bought my shadow from....it is a piece of junk.
