Need bike advice

Hi, hopefully someone can help me out. First off, I'm in the matket for a bike. I have about 30 years riding experience, but haven't owned a bike for the past 5 years and need some help. I'm looking for either a CR250R or a YZ250. Before anyone suggests a thumper, I realize they may be the future, but my tastes and more importantly my budget dictate a used bike and the new 450s are simply too expensive for me. I do most of my riding on logging roads and trails in the summer and sand dunes in the spring and fall. What I mainly am looking for here is any advice on problems to look for when buying a one or two year old bike. I've heard Yamaha had some crank and rod problems a couple years ago, any truth to that? Also, while I'm not going to be doing any racing, I would like the most bang for the buck, so which motor is best suited to dunes? How about the best mid-range motor? Any help at all would be greatly appreciated! Thanks,
