Auto oil, is it ok?

I have read some posts on here that are pretty technical about auto vs bike oil. I just want to know if it is safe to use?
&
Is it ok to change it every 250 miles or so? I ride a max of about 3 hours a week sometimes less. Changing my oil every 8 hours seems silly with the little riding I do.

It would be silly to change the oil every eight hours if the bike had not actually been running during those eight hours.
