If not at DW'04 - why not?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

why did/could you not attend DW'04..?

Posted by: HobRoff---------------------

I was under contract until the 15th of this month with a snowball's chance of finishing early, and Oklahomey is a very long haul. Really wish I coulda made it, looking at Reno now but working for yourself can make things challenging for planning things other than work, raining so much around here right now thinking of having a fork mod done!!!

Posted by: MX-727---------------------

Actually, we need another reason. The total cost: RV, registration for 4 people/6 days, food, bike parts etc......

Never really factored in the cost of gasoline though.

Posted by: velosapiens---------------------

how bout 'cuz it's in freakin' oklahoma!'

seriously, i'm sure it's fun, but if i'm going to travel, i'd like to ride 70-100 miles of mostly twisty singletrack every day. i guess that's why i like the idaho spodefest. if i could get to dirtweek in 4-5 hrs (like the moonrocks ride in feb), i would definitely go.

Its kinda far for me w/the gas prices.. Plus i would have too use up alot of vacation.. One of these years perhaps

Posted by: Okiewan---------------------

Ricky... hook-up with a caravan/ride with someone... share a ride, save gas.

Psst! Rich, they have locksmiths where you live! Hunters, too!

Posted by: BSWIFT---------------------

I made it for the set up day for a few hours. Work hammered me. I really expected to be there Friday and Saturday but it was a no go. It was very sad Oct. 3 to roll into an empty park to pick up the spode wash. It was nice that it had already been loaded onto the trailer.

I know for a fact he exists since i borrowed a chain break from him at a DW. Guess you should of gone to one a year sooner.

Posted by: MXGirl230---------------------

We had already taken a big trip this year (honeymoon), plus we bought me a new(er) truck. We'll be at Dirtweek next year!

Posted by: gwcrim---------------------

It's kinda far away and I have three little ones. The oldest is in 2nd grade. My wife would shoot me if I left her for that long. And NO she won't come along. It wouldn't be a "family" vacation. It would be MY fun and her watching the kids.

Were I single, I'd have to think I'd go.

Posted by: WaltCMoto---------------------

CRIM,
Get that 7yr old a xr50 and he ( or she) would do 500 laps on the small track. There are a bunch of younger kids there.

You're right Jeff, I'm really just a sock puppet that Gomer made a long time ago. Everything that gets typed under my name is really Gomer typing with the sock on one hand and a moon pie in the other. Hopefully this will explain the poor spelling and the occasional off-topic rant. Gomer gets pretty charged up when he's got 6 or 8 moon pies under his belt and a snoot full of Mountain Dew.

Please don't ask what he does with the sock AFTER he's done typing

I've seen what he does with his marshmellows when he's done riding, that's enough for me

DW03 was just too expensive. I'd (we) like to attend another but it's going to be a while.

Posted by: KelvinKDX---------------------

My new school was a big part of not making it to DW04.

Besides - i lost a wife at DW03!!! yep - that's when things (her mind) fell apart ....

Posted by: calamari racer---------------------

My toyhauler jacknifed and rolled my suv on the way to my first DW04 and I spent 6hrs in the emergency room. Both were totalled. I think that qualifies me for first prize in the bad luck catagory.

Posted by: tnrider---------------------

you also need to add "recovering from dirtriding related injury". its a long way to drive to just watch...

that was bad luck. I'd still trade 03's fate for your accident any day.

HHHmmmm.......... maybe I ought to go next year. But with my luck, someone would find her and return her.

Posted by: wrench---------------------

This has been an unusually slow year at the shop. I took a week in July to go to Cancun, Mexico and didn't want to push my luck at shop. There is always next year!

My sisters wedding was the Saturday of the MX races and other mandatory wedding events were throughout the week.

I almost had someone bring my bike and flew out for a day or two, but I never got all that together.

Posted by: Jamir---------------------

Gas$$ for me and time off. I think if it were earlier in the year, people would have more vacation time left

Posted by: Okiewan---------------------

Thats why the dates are set nearly a year in advance

Posted by: Jamir---------------------

I know this and that is logical. But at the same time, I know that I reserve vacation time at the beginning of the year for dates in the fall. But by fall, I have usually dwindled away my vacation time for other things.

Posted by: Okiewan---------------------

Earlier in the year is a problem for several reasons, to include a couple; 1) tracks/facilities schedules booked, 2) many involved in local series' of some kind.

Posted by: Jamir---------------------

Hey man, I never said I was smart! I was just sayin, ya know? I don't know. I just know that 2004 was an uber crappy year for me both personally and financially. Believe me, I would have much rather have spent as much time as possible at DW. Hell Okie, just seeing your glowing face would have brightened me up like the wheels on Lou's bike!

I hear ya, it was a tough year for a lot of folks. We're going to do our part to make affording DirtWeek a lot easier in 05... stay tuned.

Posted by: Jamir---------------------

oh hell man, unless you can make my car get 900 mpg, I don't know what you can do! :P

Posted by: CHIP---------------------

I wanted to go "oh so badly" this year but couldn't because of conflicts. I still have the flier on my bulletin board in front of me....
