I am looking at a few different 450's locally and need some help deciding what to get. I am looking at an 02 crf with some aftermarket parts, and the valves have already needed to be shimmed. They are asking $3300. I am also looking at an 03 ktm 450sx, all stock. They are asking $3650. I had planned on getting a crf all along, but I am considering the ktm now. I have heard the comparisons between the yzf and crf motors but nothing about the ktm. How does the 450sx compare to a crf?

If the valves on the CRF have been shimmed then you need to get the SS valves and springs put in. You will have to reshim the 2002 before long if you don't.

The KTM is a good bike too but has some issues with the conical springs with the valves. There is much debate about how severe of an issue that is but it is worth taking into consideration.

I just read a review of the 450SX from KTM today on motocross action. Apparantly the new one for 05 is improved even more than the older ones but they are saying it still does not compare the the YZF/CRF crowd, the 525 is required for that. I would stay with the CRF if I were you, get on top of the maintenance and keep up with it and it will be fine. All of the guys I know with them who actuall spent the time checking valve clearances every 10 hours or so love their 450's.

My 02 CRF was the most reliable bike I ever owned, but you should be cautious of a CRF with alot of hard hours on it. It would be nice to know who owned it last and what kind of rider they were. Shimmed valves are not a cause for alarm. Most 02s have probably had them done at least once by now.

Hopefully, the mods on the CRF you are looking at include a reinforcement plate for the leaky airbox. That was a problem with all the 02 CRs and CRFs. The stock steering is a little sluggish on the bike, but it can be fixed with either 20mm triple clamps or a different shock linkage. The 20mm clamps did wonders for my 02. Truespode will tell you that the linkage mod works better than the 20mm clamps.

Thanks for the help. I am picking up the crf on Sunday. One of the valves has been shimmed on it already and all the others are still in check. I planned on getting triple clamps and the shock linkage, but I was wondering whether to get the clamps/linkage or go for the SS valves right away? I have also been looking for a plastic kit, but I cant find anything in white?? I love the way white plastics and a polished frame look.

Look at it this way. If you do the valves now you should have money down the road to buy all sorts of aftermarket stuff. If you put it off you might be dropping all that money in to engine repairs.
