14 y.o. looking to move up from TTR 125

My son has a birthday coming up (14) and wants to upgrade from his 03 TTR125. He is 5'6" 125 lbs. We ride some woods and some sand at St. Joe State Park in Missouri. He doesn't want a 4 stroke slug like a CRF230. I would classify him as a novice rider gaining skills. He is not much of a risk taker, but wants a bike that is capable of ripping in the open, but still rideable in the woods. I'm looking for suggestions. Here are some possibles:

KX100
Any 2 stroke 125
CRF250X
???

My first choice would probably be the CRF250X as he can grow into it and I would get some use out of it as well. Push button in the woods is a nice feature too. BTW, this is not for me, I have a bunch of other bikes, but they are all vintage/postvintage racers and he wants a 'modern' bike. Fire away!

Sounds like you already know the answer to your question.

Given the circumstances, the CRF250X would be an excellent choice.

I think GoSpeedRacers KTM200 would be just about perfect. She rides like a girl so it's in primo shape. He's big enough for a 125 chassis and has some seat time so it's not like twisting the throttle and shifting gears will be all new to him. It won't have the magic button but they sure are sweet bikes, especially for your application. At 5'6" he's too tall for the KX100 to be a good fit for long if at all. I'd also avoid a full on MX bike since he is still a little green and the type of riding you are wanting isn't real condusive to a stock MX bred bike.

Pat,

I haven't ridden any KTM, but I hear the 200 is pretty explosive, true? Untrue? I briefly rode a crf250x 6 months ago and it seemed pretty controllable. I'll do some more research on the ktm200.

Thanks,

Tommy

How about a very nice 78 Honda CR250 with rebuilt Fox Airs,
new Red-Racer aluminum brake stay, airbox ring and plastic. Recent
top end? HaHaHa. Where were you Sunday? Didn't see you. On the KTMs, I would guess the exc model would be a nice fit for the riding you mentioned; they also made a SX model in the past that may have more of a midrange hit! I imaging any 2 stroke 125 mx bike will be difficult in the tight parts of St.Joe park.

Hey Rog!

I'm chasing points in the AHRMA Cross Country series and have been gone 3 of the last six weekends. It was her turn to take some time away. Last race this weekend in Alabama. You moving up to expert? See you in the spring!

I don't think it would be too bad, I find them a great woods ride. Much more controlable power than the 125s yet still very light.

I posted a message for GSR. She's less than 2 hours from me. Thanks!

No problem, looks like it might help both of you out.

Tom,
Yes to the expert move. My big bike broke again this weekend! Kick start return spring. I've also gotta split the cases and get them to seal up better. What a PITA that bike's been. I've got all winter for that.
Hey, I was thinking I need a vintage 125 or 250. What do you think? CZ, Ossa....others? Maybe I need a Maico so I can ask you for advice on maintenance
I do like everything I've ever read about the KTM 200 though.
Roger
