KDX200 for Jumps?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I am looking to buy a bike and I have had my mind set on a KDX200 until today. My friend's dad made two doubles, one is about 4 feet high and a 15-20ft gap, and the other one is about 4-5ft high and about a 20ft gap. I was watching my friends jump them all day and realized how fun it would be to jumps jumps like that. I would still want to ride/race cross country, but now I would like to do jumps about that size.

Would I be able to do these types of jumps ok with a KDX200?

Jeff

I don't see why not as long as your suspension is set up fairly correctly, and as long as you have the commitment to clear the doubles.

I have heard people say that those bikes can jump like mx bikes and handle like trail bikes. Very versetile bike if you ask me. It also has some decent power also, for a trail bike

holy crap. Thats some BIG air, well at least for what im used to.. is that a KDX200? did you just take off the head and tail lights and all that stuff? What mods do you have on it to be able to do that stuff, if any?

A KDX is basically an older KX125 frame with a bigger motor stuffed into it... and conventional instead of inverted forks. I mean they jumped KX125s

could you explain to me what "conventional" and "inverted" forks are?

Thanks,
Jeff

Hey Jeff,
Back in about 1989 or so, the major manufacturers started putting inverted forks on production MX bikes. Basically, an inverted fork has the shiny sliding part of the tube at the bottom and the larger diameter tube up at the top. They look "upside-down" compared to the forks you see on older motorcycles, mountain bikes, or less sophisticated motorcycles like a Harley. Inverted forks resist flex better than conventional forks because the larger diameter tubes at the top of the fork are stiffer. You don't get inverted forks on a KDX because they cost more to produce.

Inverted forks are great, but they are not necessary for the kind of riding you are describing. A stock KDX will handle the jumps you speak of just fine. As you start jumping bigger jumps, you can always upgrade to stiffer suspension springs for increased bottoming resistance.

Only nine more days until my birthday and I hope I get a KDX200.

a kdx has a 43mm fork i believe,, and a new kx has a 46 or 48mm?,, anyway, didnt a kx have 43mm conventional forks back in 87? therefore, wouldnt stiffer springs and the clickers turned in a bit just about equal the forks a kx had in 87? for the people who did do some jumps on a kdx,, how is your frame and rims holding up?

thanks.
