I have rode quads for 15 years never followed up on bikes. I am about 5"10 and 200lbs. I have had
1989/87 banshee piped ported carbed blueprinted
87 tecate 250 with a 330 big bore
85/86 350x modded
99 400ex modded
85/84 200x
85 250 quadracer
85 250r atc
87 430 warrior
94 300 ex
my first and only bike was a 100 dt enduro and that ruined the bike riding for me. heavy and powerless. what i haved learned is It is easier
to get more power that to get handling. So with that said, My biggest concern Is a great handling bike. I ride woods and I don't mind a white nuckle ride (power wise). I had a couple of them ( Banshee ) ( tecate) but their was an extreme diffence in the feel between the quads i had. i will buy an older bike But not real old

Thanks for your help
adam
i Am thinking of somthing in the 250 two stroke line
I want to try something new

Adam we are going to need to know how big you are and what type of riding you plan to use the bike for before we can make too many recommendations. Also if your planning used a ballpark budget would be helpful.

Chili, in the first line of his post, he says he is 5'10" 200lbs. But budget would help.

I had alot of street bike riding (Honda CBRs) before buying my first dirt bike (was in 2002, at 41 yr. old). I always wanted a 2 stroke dirt bike, so I bought a 2001 RM 125 (it was cheap). It has been great. I've trail riden it with the kids and wife, and followed one of the children into motocross. I MX it now only about once a month but love it. I think it's great for trails, but most people would say that's crazy (lots of clutching).

Motoman, you say you ride woods, so being a little larger than me (I'm 5'10", 145 lbs.) if you have self control (a subject I know nothing about, that's why I no longer have the CBRs), buy the 250 2 stroke. As recent a 250 2 stroke as your budget allows.

I'm sure the 4 stroke guys will also have an opinion. Just my 2 cents, I'm sure much more experienced dirt bikers will have better info. in following posts. This place (dirtrider.net) has been a great source of information for me as I converted from street to dirt.

250 MX bikes are great all around off roaders. Plenty of power and great suspension. If you want BIG power, opt for a 500. I just love the big bore torque.
