I am 37 and last time I raced and rode, was in March 03, a H/S on a KTM 450.
I am getting back into it and do not want to really race - apart from a few MX or H/S - but mainly want to go have fun on tracks with my 3 boys.
Is a CRF or YZF 250 too small, or is a 450 too big or too powerful???

If ypur just going to have fun with your boys, I would go with a 250.I found that I can go faster around the track on a 250 four stroke than I can on my 250 two stroke. On the 4stroke all you do is hold it wide open. The benefit of the 450 is that you can go alot faster out in the open.I see guys all day long blowing the doors of the 450's on there 250's out at the track.Sometimes I ride my wifes bike which is a 03ktm250exc four stroke, which is so not a mx bike but I can keep up with the 450's.I think on a track a 450 is just a waste of displacement because you will never see the full potential of that bike on a track. The 250f has useable power where the 450 does not. That is my opinion.

Thanks Killerbeez! It makes sense, and having fun is what I am looking for. I had a KTM 450 before, but I was living in a different place and over there, there was no restrictions on dirt bike riding, open spaces everywhere and a 450 was needed. I have not tried a 250F but as you say, I am not going for a championship and don;t need a 450.
Will have to make a choice between the CRF, YZF or the RMZ. Mmmmh... Santa will have to choose for me I guess!!

that kinda depends on how big you are ....

That being said, the 250F's are a blast, really fun to ride. The 450 is a little more serious about putting the power down. On the plus side, you can be lazy on the 450 and still go fast, more so than the 250. Stick a 450 in 3rd and don't bother with shifting

I'm 185 pounds. I know, sure the 450 has enough power for a local race. I had the same stunt on the KTM, keep it in 3rd in the tight sections.
