Help Me Plese

More info please? How tall? How heavy? What type? Skill level, experience? We cant suggest anything w/o that info. Well we could but here is the range you could get. I think the ttr 90 is a great yami 4 stroke. I also think the xr 650 is a great honda four stroke.

I am in the same boat. I have a 16 year old looking for his first bike. He weighs 135lbs and has never riden a bike before. I have considered the Yamaha ttr125l but have been told it would not hold up. I have been told that the non-racing bikes would be a waste of time and frustratingly painful in repairs. Do you have any suggestions?

I think a good first bike would be either the honda crf250x or the yamaha wr250.Both bikes have electric start and great bikes.

a ttr125l is a good bike but only for a short time. the 8hp engine is fun for a beginner but after a short amount of time they will easily grow out of it and size wise too. 16 and only 135? I just turned 16 and i am almost 215. Ide go with a newer honda crf150 or 230 or possibly a ttr230

also killerbeez 75 has some good choices there too.

one of my bikes is a ttr125 and the only thing it is good for is getting the mail.

The Yamaha TTR 230 just looks like a beginer bike. The bike weighs more than a YZF 450. It is extremely heavy and underpowered.

I would love to see a beginer bike with decent suspension and reasonable weight.

I would maybe try an XR250 if he is big enough. Those are excellent bikes with excellent trail suspension. My buddy has one and unless you are MX'ing it or going to the dunes a lot, it is an excellent bike. It is also extremely reliable.

both are way to powerful for a first bike beginner also very tall for a first bike on trails - beginners (and some with more experience) like to be able to easily put a foot down anywhere... however, likewise the ttr125 may be too small depending on height. of course i play on my wife's ttr125le (slightly taller version of the ttr125) and i wear 32" inseam (no sag here ) and weigh 175-lbs. i also have a xt225 (dual-sport version of the ttr230 - higher gearing) it is a heavy bike (compared to my crf450) and under powered - great for a trail bike but not if you want to do any air time. so, while heavy compared to race machines, the xr250 or ttr250 would be reasonable if the kid can handle the weight - my test is to put the bike on its side and then if my kid can pickup and push to the counter, i will buy it...

if would consider a 2-stroke, what about the kawasaki kx100 - slightly less than a race-bred 125 yet more than the 85. i think the price is about the same as a ttr125 and it has much more power and better brakes/suspension... yet not really a trailbike as it comes from the factory, i have been considering one for my backyard mx bike.

First, his son is twelve and obviously still growing. Both the x and wr line of bikes are much more tame than regular 250 models and are made for pretty much just strictly trail riding and are a huge step above any air cooled bike such as the xr line or the ttr line. Also the x and wr line come with way better suspension so that if the rider gets comfortable on the bike at a fast rate and wants to try to start jumping he can do so without fear of breaking the bike in half such as the ttr line that uses the motor as a stress member. He is twelve years old and is likely to be strongly influenced by other riders his age within the next couple of years, so there is no reason to put him on a bike that puts him at a dissadvantage from the get go.

Let's just say that he picks up this whole ridding dirt bikes thing, and it becomes more of a passion like it has for some of the ridders on DRN.For one he won't have to sell the bike after one season because he grew out of it so quickly ans two, he wont have to do major suspension mods right off the bat like you would with the ttr or xr line.Anyway that is also just my strong opinion, as for me,I would never condemn my son to any air cooled machine,I'm just a fan of technology and superior performance.

It boils down to this: you can either buy a bike for right now and have him outgrow it in six months or you can buy a bike for the long term and give him a steep learning curve in the beginning. There's really no middle ground, because anything good for beginners is going to suck once he gets the hang of it and anything good for the long haul will be a handful for a beginner. The features that make a good beginner bike (short suspension, low power, etc.) don't make for a good bike once you know what you're doing when riding.

Boy if that doesn't sum it all up pretty well. I like the idea of a 100cc MX bike for a 12 year old. But you have to make the call if he's an aggressive kid or not. Look at their other interests. Are they into 'extreme' sports? Skiers? Football star? Skateboarding? Or are they more happy at a computer or video game?
