My 16 year old, about 130 pounds, is also ADAMANTLY wanting a dirt bike. He is a beginner, wants to ride off trail. I need something that won't cost me an arm and a leg plus has reliability and good repair record. I know very little other than I want a 4 stroke and power that could handle his needs for about two years at least. Also, where do you find places to ride? Please help a mom whose kid won't stop bugging her. Many thanks.

That's a tough one... being a beginner, he needs a beginner bike, being 16, he probably wants the fastest thing out there. Someone who's been in your spot will reply with some suggestions. Please let us know how tall he is, and what "an arm and a leg" costs.

4 stroke for sure -depending on his size you might be looking at a TTR 225 or a TTR 250, or Honda CRF 230 or Suzuki DRZ-250 or something similar - if he is very small for his age maybe the TTR125 ( the one with bigger wheels)

get a new one ( most manufacturers have terrific deals - like 75$ a month etc)

Buying a used bike can easily run into some big $ in repairs - and when it is broken is sort of defeats the purpose of having a bike .

Make him earn enough money somehow to make the payments- good life lesson

only let him ride it where it is legal to ride and don't let him mess with the muffler.

So shop around and look at everything before you make a decision

His friends may have the fastest race bikes, but race bikes are not really for trail riding or for beginners. i know from personal experience when i was a kid my folks bought me a Hodaka trail bike and I was crushed because I wanted a race bike, but I learned to like the bike and for what I did with it it was perfect. My friends made fun of me but I still had fun.

Just my 2 cents.

I will second the CRF 230 I have heard nothing but good things about them as a beginer bike and I have a friend who raced one in the local motocross beginer class all season (about 12 races, 24 motos) against 250F race bikes and 125 race bikes and 250 two stroke race bikes and he didnt win once but did fine and had a ton of fun.
His was completley stock with just revalved suspension.

Next year I believe he is going to get a KXF 250 now that he has some experience and knows for sure he likes racing.
