Preping my bike for Hare scamble's - Mods required

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Hi, I have just bought a stock 2003 KDX220R.

I am trying to prepare it for Hare Scrambles and have bought some Hand Guards (Magnum Pro Rally AT-97984). Unfortunately the clutch lever seems to foul them. If anybody has advice on fitting them or a guide then that would be great.

Does anybody have any experience of using a slightly shorter clutch lever ?

I would appreciate any Tips on preping for racing as I have never raced before and it's 21 years since I regularly rode on street bikes

Have you cut the balls off of your levers? <--didn't sound right but cut them and file/smooth the ends and you should be set

All I did for harescrambles was, install bark busters, stiffer fork springs and a good set of tires. Don't forget propper jetting.

My normal prepartation for a hare scrambles is to completely check over the bike:

1) Totally inspect bike for any cracks, unforeseen damage, brake pads, adjust clutch and brakes, etc.

2)change oil, clean air filter, clean/lube chain, etc

3) check all bolts, spokes, etc

4) check out my suspension log and set up forks/shock for anticipated conditions

5) Make sure carb is jetted for event, temp, elevation, etc

6) tire pressure and final carb adjust morning of event

Thanks for all the advice.

I cut the ball off the clutch lever and the Hand Guards (Magnum Pro Rally AT-97984) now fit great.
I have decided to run with lower gearing (12 tooth front sprocket).

I have also decided to run 40:1 Amsoil Racing synthetic so it will be slightly richer due to the lower oil addition (0.625%)

I live in Michigan and have modified the Airbox AKA Canadian Dave's advice, does it need re-jetting?

Thanks for all the advice!

It will be greatly worth your time to make sure your bike is properly jetted. Even if you open up your carb just to check what jets are in it..

Good advice! The airbox lid leans the mixture a little. You should look at your plug after riding for awhile to make sure it's not black and wet, or white and dry (around the electrode). That's a ballpark to start figuring out where you stand. Check out some sites on plug chop jetting techniques to get a little deeper.
I also recommend getting several jets around the size of your main and pilot jet. They're cheap. Keep a log of what you use where and rough alt and temp. Definitely write down what's in your carb right now.

Fitted higger rate springs to suit my weight (205lbs) I'll try them out at the next race.

Thanks for all the advice.

I've only raced 1 harescramble, but I've done a few motos.

Before race day I like to go through everything, clean airfilter, fresh oil, new plug, check all nuts / bolts / spokes etc. Race day I pretty much check tire pressure and go.

Good things to have for a hare scramble:
Bark Busters
Skid Plate
Radiator Guards
Lots and lots of water

I did the White Trash HS in the thumb in June, it was super, super tight, and there were a few radiator shrouds laying in the course after the first lap. My buddy bent the crap out of his YZF426 radiator. I don't run guards, but they are on my list of things to get. The barkbusters were absolutly a neccessity.

Curious, where do you plan on racing? I'm trying to get my buddy to race the team class with me at Polka Dots in Midland this weekend. I don't know if I am up for 3 hours of racing alone again.

Sherby if you haven't done it yet be sure and take apart your entire rear suspension linkage, and swingarm assembly. They have virtually NO grease from the factory. Kawasaki must think the stuff is made of GOLD. LOL The steering stem bearings are in the same boat, little to no grease in them either. Those are must do whether you race it or not.

I have raced at all the District 14 Harescrambles except for PMP. I'm not very good (too old to be starting - 41 no dirt riding experience). It has been a lot fun My number is 730 - I did Polka Dots 4 laps Z class 2Hrs 17mins.

See you at Valley Trail Riders
