My New invention

Last night I went out to rent a movie... I noticed some young bored looking kids, I did'nt think much of it... After I came home my wife says somebody rang the door bell and was messing around or something after I left... She was freaked out a little, and that's when I came up with this idea... Mounted right on the door a small box with a button, hit the button and the unmistakable sound of a shot gun being cocked, "ker-clink ker-clink" can be heard from outside... Press the button to play the sound and say who's there or whatever if for some reason your scared... What bad guy in there right mind is gonna hang around, they just rung the bell and already they hear someone cocking a shot gun... The box would come with mounting hardware, batteries, and one of those "Alarm by Smith & Wesson" stickers... a 50 dollar value all for $19.95... I bet allot of people who are afraid to own guns would buy those things... People who live in Brooklyn or someplace sketchy...

It's nice of the "bad guys" to ring the door bell before ransacking your house. Do they do that often in CA?

Posted by: Patman---------------------

Man I love Texas!
-"You" break in to my house and I shot "you" all that happens is that "you" are dead and I have a mess to clean up.
-"You" kill somebody and we kill "you" back.

Sort of deters them without the plug in box

What would be even more funny is when the local law enforcement rings your door bell to, ohh let's say, inform you of the upcoming neighborhood "Crime Watch" meeting or ask you to move you car parked in the street.

Ohh yeah, that would be just freakin hilarious when SWAT kicks in your front door and shoves a M16 through your front teeth.

Your dentist will be laughing his or her arse off

No offense but that's the LAST type of sticker you want on your house and/ or car for that matter. Might as well put a sticker on there that says,"Wait till nobody's around and please come in and take my high $$ firearm(s)."

Actually, this happens quite often. They ring the doorbell and bumrush you when you answer the door. If I'm not expecting anybody late at night and there is a nock at the door my .45 is in my hand behind my back.

Needless to say, a peep hole is probably the best solution. I certainly wouldn't want to let anyone know I was armed unless absolutely necessary (this includes giving them the impression that I'm armed). Also, a firearm sticker on the front door will surely make your home a target for B & E while you are at work. Theives love to steal guns.

Ya beat me to it Greenhorn .

Actually crooks often times will ring the bell before breaking in to make sure nobody is home, even if they have "cased" the house for some time and know everyone is gone... Or when you do open the door they will force there way into your house... But if you hear someone cocking a shot gun asking who's there most likley the bad guys will leave... Also the Police will say something when you ask "who's there" most people will say something... I had just left for the video store and these kids were hanging around in the parking lot across the street... these kids knew I was'nt around... My wife thought that they just wanted her to open up the door so they could then enter, she was scared... In the high desert it's not uncommon to have kids hopped up on meth looking for ways to make some quick cash... I asked her if she wanted a hand gun, I told her she could take a class and everything... She was'nt interested... That's when I came up with idea for the sound box thing...

Or for about $20 you can put a fake camera on your front porch with a red LED indicating it's recording. Another thing is to put alarm system signs and stickers on and around your house. Make them go next door instead.

Motion detector lights are also cheap.

German Shepherds work wonders! We had two growing up when I was a kid and my mom worried at night because my dad worked nights. The male we had was all black and was quite large too.NOBODY entered our home without us telling "Hector" it was ok.And his deep growl when he didn't care for somebody kept things in check very nicely. He never bit anybody and when I told him a visitor was ok...he may not have liked it but he listened. It seemed he could tell if somebody was not up to par for some reason. And others he would be fine with...no problem.I do miss the intelligence of the shepherd dog tho. They seemed to become "one" with their masters.A very cool thing indeed.

Yeah, dogs work great, I have a Chow-Sheppard mix, that will keep people in check, never barks at anything unnecessary, and is just big enough to be intimidating. One time we had one of my wifes coworkers attempt to watch the house and the poor guy only came over one time, but we thought that was enough because she loved him to death. That was untill I was in Dayton Ohio, and not Jacksonville Arkansas, 12 hours away and she would not let him in the house.

Yeah, our Ridgeback is a pretty good deterent. Most people see her and stay at the gate until we've called her back.

There are already recordings available of a growling dog that plays when the motion sensor pourch light comes on.

Yup, big bad dogs are a good idea. We're down to just one now but our rottweiler makes a nice deterrent. She's an inside dog but likes to patrol the yard (all fenced except the driveway) a few times at night, growling and snarling as she makes the rounds. We're looking to get another or perhaps a mastiff in the near future.

We have the peephole in the door and can also see who's knocking from the living room window. If I don't know you, I answer the door with 357 in hand but out of sight- day or night.

The knock on the door in the middle of the night followed by the "bum rush" when you answer is a fact of life even in this small town. I never answer the door in the middle of the night. I let the rottie "talk" while I sit in the dark, 12 ga in hand, waiting for someone stupid enough to kick their way in.

There are much easier places to knock off than ours. Fenced yard, lots of random obstacles planted (we love rose bushes and privet) and placed (knee high benches, bird baths, and railroad ties for landscape timbers) throughout the yard, rottie with a bad attitude, and owner with worse. We have bells on all the doors so if a door opens you'll know. Yup, much easier places to hit but ya never know anymore.

And remember, just because you're paranoid doesn't mean someone's not after you.

If your a little paranoid, it means that you are one step closer to being prepared.

Dogs are really good for letting you know when someone is around, but there are ways around dogs for criminals. I hate to even mention it, but it has been a long time tactic for criminals (usually those who intend more harm than a simple burglary) to toss a piece of poisoned meat onto the property and simply wait for the dog to pass on before entering. Don't place all of your security eggs in one basket. The bells on the doors are a great idea b/c criminals don't expect people to be that prepared. However, even a well prepared homeowner is still at a disadvantage during a break in.

If any of you have firearms and are looking for more information on self defense measures (in or out of the home), I would highly suggest picking up some material written by Massad Ayoob, at the very least. A good general topic book is "In the Gravest Extreme : The role of the firearm in self defense." He has others that go into more depth on tactical measures, but it is a great place to start. He is considered to be one of the leading authorities on self defense.

Most importantly, learn to spot things that are a little out of the ordinary. It seems that is what dante did when leaving the home, even if it did involve a group of kids.

Yup, that's why our dogs have always been inside dogs except when nature calls, or their nightly patrols. They are more family than pets. At least in our area it takes more advance preparation to bring poison food for dogs than burglars are willing to make. Not saying it couldn't happen, but unless it's a high vaue target (and we certainly aren't) most locally seem to be after the easy mark (and we aren't).

Very good point. All of our neighbors know each other (even if they don't get along), and will watch out for each other, keep an eye on strangers walking the neighborhood, or warn you if something odd is going on. We're used to living out in the country and after seven years of living in a small neighborhood still glance out the window when a car drives by. It's habit. If you live on a road where less than 10 cars a day drive by your house, you know when someone pulls up and will go to see who it is. Being alert isn't hard to do.
