Southern Spodefest

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: joereitman---------------------

After a great group ride at Aonia in mid- December we began discussing Southern Spodefest. Ivan suggested Aonia again, and that seemed to be the consensus. Best groomed MX track in these parts, fun and challenging SX track, loads of new trails, plus rumor has it there will be a freestyle ramp for Gomer to strut his stuff. :D

Not to mention free camping, cheap electric hookup, and lots of burgers on the grill at the Gomerhome. Plus I think it is time to institute DW style competions...

Thinking of earlier this year, when it is a tad bit cooler. April 2-3 seems to be a good date. Still gives Wrench time to get his YZ together, Whyzee time to find a bike, JBoomer time to find heavy duty tubes he will not pinch flat, and Lemming time to get another 50 to whoop up on Ivan in the woods with. Thoughts?

Posted by: James---------------------

Aonia good!
April good!
2-3rd ok.

Unless work interferes....I'll be there.

Posted by: jboomer---------------------

I'll try and make that, had a great time last year! Work may be the problem though.

Sounds great to me!!

What do folks have to do to attend such an event? Are these things family friendly, or are small riders likely to be left in the dust? I'd like to bring myself, my wife and 12yr old daughter.

Posted by: James---------------------

All you have to do is show up and preferably let us know that you are "ChopperDave" so we don't think you are just another local. I can't remember what kind of tracks were there for smaller riders, but the trails appeared to be very friendly, open, good visibility, and your crew could probably ride out there at their own pace no problem. I think Gomer's clan has several smaller riders that ride at Aonia all the time.

Posted by: tnrider---------------------

if nothing breaks (me, bike, truck, trailer...) i plan to attend -- if nothing else, to meet some of you crazies in person.

chopperdave - what part of "middle tn" will you come from? i will head out of knoxville down 75 - perhaps we can convoy down. its about 7-hours from knoxville, so i will likely try to make atlanta friday night (4-hours) and then finish sat morning (3-hours). the drive back sunday night will be the killer will have to take an ipv (in plant vacation) on monday to recover!

(ever ride windrock outside oak ridge?).

Are yankees allowed?

Posted by: tnrider---------------------

i'm a damn yankee - moved here about 9-years ago and don't plan to move back north! now if we can only accelerate the global warming thing - we have snow blowing around today - but mid-40's tomorrow and mid-50's on sat - i can hear my crf talking to me!

Posted by: Senior KX Rider---------------------

Where is Aonia located? Do they have a website?

try a google search on: aonia mx

or for those googleless... : http://www.aonia-pass-mx.com/

Posted by: Senior KX Rider---------------------

Thanx, did a search before I posted that but mis-spelled. Found it right after I posted

I will be coming from Clarksville. I've been to windrock, some of those trails are wicked! I had a hard time fining my way around, but the scenery is second to none. We should get together and rid there. Do you get any days off during the week?

clarksville - that makes you local to lbl?

i tend to avoid the difficult trails - one of the guys i work with claims the back side is better - although is single track with an occasional tree across (i have not been back there in 2-years)

i can usually take a day off (occasionally...) wed afternoon is a good ride as kids are out of school by 1:30 and we can make it to the dirt by 2:30 including a late lunch on the way - gives a nice evening ride in spring/fall, daylight is too short right now -- just don't get caught up there at night w/o headlights (did once - ouch!)

i avoid windrock on weekends - too many crazies out there. also have to be very careful on week days from about 4pm -6pm (esp 5pm) on main service roads as those working up there (lumber, mines, etc) get off work and rip down the roads on their 4x4s.

i think the least expensive hotel is the super-8 and it is also the nearest to windrock ~5-miles.

I'd like to express some interest in attending the festivities.

Is it open to any and all DRN southern folk or is this some type of club thing?

If I attend, will I get ragged on for not having the skills that most of you have now? I just bought my bike this past weekend and I am eager to find a place to go ride.

What kind of cost is associated with this trip?

Posted by: JuliusPleaser---------------------

You'll need a $500 deposit (payable to ME) a bike, $12.50 for a commemorative T-shirt with a picture of Ivan on it, and a short stick so you can poke Gomer every time he falls. You'll also need a pair of ear plugs in case Lemming corners you and starts talking about how studly and talented he is.

If you'll just smile and nod your head occasionally, he'll never notice the ear plugs. It's not like he'll give you a chance to actually SAY anything, anyway.

A couple of sedatives for Wrench would probably be a good idea as well.

Posted by: KMAPRO---------------------

Excuse me for laughing, but that was hillarious!!!!

Posted by: Lemming---------------------

One time at band camp.....

If you can fly out, you can ride my CRF. Pretty sure I won't be.

Posted by: JuliusPleaser---------------------

I'll take the blame. It's not like he's Ivan or anything.

Posted by: Lemming---------------------

That first weekend in April is open for me. I may have to buy some "heat-n-eat" burritoes and take a drive

Posted by: High Lord Gomer---------------------

Scientists at the Uniburpity of Bambalamba are eager to start work on version two of a perpetual motion machinec based on a design copied from Ivan's mouth.

They're hoping that version two's rev limitter will keep it from flying apart the way version one did.

As I get older I've learned to spin a mean yarn, even if I have to embelish on the story. This is especially true since I can no longer afford to spend all my energy to make sure that I am faster than Goober, I mean Gomez, eer Gomer. Instead, I now spend my energy hunting down unsuspecting women. This has lead to a decline in my ability to podium as is shownn in the following epic video (www.dpo.uab.edu/~tnagy/Maplesville.wmv).

Yours truly, the Old Salty Dog or Lazy Lemming, take your pick.

You guys will understand what that means when Lemming invites you to go 'clubbing'.

Posted by: Lemming---------------------

Let's try seals, or maybe just a Hilton

Posted by: Lemming---------------------

So I come out of retirement and now everyone gets quiet. Let me guess, you've started a new thread that I don't have access to and have set a new date for the Southern Spodefest

Posted by: High Lord Gomer---------------------

It was last weekend. No need to check back, though...we'll call you before the next one.

Posted by: joereitman---------------------

Hey y'all. Sorry I have been awol. Been busy editing Gomer's inappropriate posts on GOR and buying stuff off **** to keep the ol' KX in one piece and running. Had to hold her together with zip ties and electrical tape at the track last weekend. True story. But I digress.

Aonia has a nice little 5/8-3/4 mile pee wee track great for the kids. Or if they want more challenge but don't desire the risk of getting landed on out on the mx track, they can roll all the jumps on the sx track. No one rides the sx track much, and you can often ride it for hours straight with the track all to yourself while there are 20-30 folks on the mx track. Don't ask me why- no one likes the sx track but Gomey and me. I guess we are just weird. But you knew that already. :P

Aonia is cheap. $15 a day gets you mx+sx+buncha trails+showers+bike wash spot+camping. Whatta deal.

It is like $5 or $10 for electrical hookup, the funny plug them thar rv types (AKA GOmer) drive.

For $20 extra we will tie Gomer and Ivan to my hitch hauler and let you roost them with gravel in the parking lot to your hearts content. I am not responsible for hospital bills and/or shredded Michelins.

I sure would like to see some DW type contests- longest most erect wheelie, pit bike races (does a modded KTM65 with DEP pipe, porting, reeds, carb etc qualify? :D ), barrell races, night time sx races (no lights of course), etc. I am certainly open for suggestions.

Expect Gomer to bring his grill. I will even bring my George Foreman electric low fat grill for you healthy eater types.

And for another extra $20 I will keep Lemming away from you at night. (Ever noticed how the victim convulses uncontrollably when you zap him with a stun gun- ooops, I am digressing again).

ps- Yankees are welcome. Plenty of room for all. See ya in 3 weeks.

Posted by: joereitman---------------------

Hmm, kinda quiet here. What is the level of interest? How many folks plan to attend?

FYI, the track and trails were pretty rough last weekend. I think I will call the owner and see if things will be fixed up by next weekend...

Posted by: joereitman---------------------

2+" of rain in the last 24 hours. More forecast for Monday and Thursday and Friday. Do y'all like mud as much as Gomer does?

Posted by: jboomer---------------------

I've been ordered to not participate in motocross (racing or practice) by my command. Considering I only have about 2 1/2 more months here I'm trying to honor that. My hopes are that when I do finish here they'll move me to Beaufort, SC....we'll see end of May or early June. Have fun guys!

Posted by: High Lord Gomer---------------------

30% chance today (Monday) and maybe some more Friday: http://www.intellicast.com/Local/US...v=none&pid=none

(I think Joe uses http://HeyBubbaIzzitGonnaRain.com )

jboomer...I think your right to hold off for a couple more months. If you move to Beaufort, you'll have lots of nice neighbors!

We'll be there! Of course, I'm not going to work on any of the bikes until we get there, though.

I'm still not capable of riding, but might putt around a little.

Posted by: jboomer---------------------

Going to see if I can put THIS little bastage on a boat mid-April. Almost there!

And a little more [clickety-clickety!

Posted by: High Lord Gomer---------------------

I assume you practice on land with a carrier deck painted on the asphault?

How many times have you gotten "wet"?

Posted by: jboomer---------------------

Yeah, we have a carrier deck painted on the runways...although using the optical landing system ("meatball") is the most important practice we get.

This will be my "initial boat qualification" <knock on wood>.

Meatball

I have to help the girlfriend move into her new place this weekend, so there's no chance of an eastward lemming migration for this spodefest

First Gomer teases me on my Bubba truck, now on my Bubba weather service. Can't win for losing. By the way, have there ever been any rainy muddy spodefests?

Don't believe a word Gomer says about inability to ride. He rode just fine a week ago... And the bikes were all fixed up and ready to go [shortly after] arrival.

Man, get your priorities straight.

Posted by: High Lord Gomer---------------------

Honestly, that was one *fine* bubba truck! What kind of mileage did you end up getting?

I guess that big, gas-guzzling V6 is the reason you have an hour radius to riding areas.

Lemming, how long can it take to move her from one pasture to another?

As far as muddy SpodeFests...the first one at Bremen had slightly moist conditions...

GOt almost 10.

ummm, v6???

I won't touch the pasture comment- Lemming can fend for himself

I assume the muddy bike was tooner's fault?

Posted by: joereitman---------------------

Trails will be closed per the owner. He says the GNCC race tore it up too bad, then they got a bunch of rain SUnday. Gomer and I saw how bad the trails were a week ago so i am not surprised.

I advised Perry the mx track was too muddy a week ago and he said he has been plowing and tilling it but it is still too muddy today. Hopefully the Thursday Friday rain will pass Aonia by and it will be dried up some.

I mentioned to Perry the big mud spot at the top of the SX track and in the middle of the whoops and hopefully that will be fixed by Saturday. He says he has someone coming in to fix up the track any day now, for the upcoming qualifier (LLQ?).

Just wanted everyone to know status so no one gets upset by lack of trail riding. I will say that maybe we can ride the old trails on the west side of the property some...

Posted by: High Lord Gomer---------------------

Since the trails will be closed and it looks like just the two of us, we may need to bag this one for now.

Posted by: Lemming---------------------

I love teats

Gomer and I made an executive decision at 22:00 EST that Suthin Spodefest is postponed due to the fact that Lemming and Jboomer are unavailable and Wrench is bikeless and MXTooner has been awol and Ivan roosted me the last time we rode. Really. It had nothing to do with the lack of trails or the track condition. Honest.

Gomer made me say that.

We talked about the need to get more formal about this and set up some actual events. Besides the longest wheelie contest.

If there is interest in making this happen please advise. I am sorry I have been so uninvolved but I seem to have taken on too much in the last couple months- work stuff, a USFS OHV site, family stuff, the list goes on and on.

Excuse mode off now. Ideas? Suggestions?
