New boots

I just bought my first pair of boots, Fly 805's. I just use them riding trails and back fields, I figured thay would be better than steel toed combat boots that I have been using. I tried them for the first time yesterday and I know a new boot is difficult at first. Could not feel the shift lever at all. I've read many posts on break in, especially the one on standing in hot water, I've worn them around the house for a week. I just tried the hot water in the bath tub, here's the dumb question, I thought mx boots were waterproof, they immediately filled with water, well I stayed in the tub for about 20 min, took them off and poured out the water, they are now sitting outside for what I am sure will take days to dry out. Was this necessary or was I wasting my time. I realize these boots are cheap but for what I use them for I figured they would suit my needs. If i find out different I will invest more $$$ next time.

Just picked up my first mx bike 3 wks ago, 2000 yz 250. Been riding for over 30 yrs(enduro bikes and street)
40 yrs young

As far as break in goes, it usually takes a ride or two. Just keep wearing them, I have worn them around the house as well. A rule of thumb for myself at least is, there are some things you can get away with being thrifty, jerseys', leathers(pants), some gloves even. Although helmet and boots are not the things to get cheap with. Speaking for myself, I have been known to catch rocks w/the feet and land on the lid.

boots can be a real pain to get use to. When i first switched over to MX boots from good ol steel toe work boot it was a mess for me. Had problems shifting and braking but after a while i got use to where the shifter and brake was. It just takes time. My friend bout a brand new pair of tech 8's and tried them for about an hour and couldn;t get use to it and hasn;t worn em since. I keep trying to get him to wear them because he has messed his ankle up a few times riding but he never does. he keeps saying next time. maybe some people just cant get use to them, i dont know

When I first switched to MX boots, it took some getting used to. I had to adjust the shifter up and the brake down. As far a break-in, a used mink oil on the leather parts..that was really it. After a 4-5 rides, they were good. Tell your buddy to suck it up and wear his boots. Ask him if he's ever seen what a peg can do to the lower leg in a crash? Ugly!
