What 80/85 is the best

Im just wondering, over the past few years who has made the best 80/85cc bikes? For a pretty new rider, does it matter what bike they get or should they just go by what color they like the best (as in the mfg. doesnt matter)?

The important thing to know about the 85's is that the KX and RM have powervalves while the YZ and CR don't. The powervalve makes the bike much easier and fun to ride. The KX is known to be the easiest bike to ride for a beginner.

KTMs are good all around if you can set them up right, otherwise they can be finicky.

The KTM 85's are rockets but the two kids I know that raced them last season had a lot of troubles with things that should never be an issue. Typical growing pains I imagine from a first year model but something to consider.

Would an 01 RM80 have a powervalve? Also, how does a powervalve work?

Yes, I think it does have a power valve.

The power valve works by blocking part of the exhaust port, which changes the port timing and gives a boost in low-end power.

I recently just got done with my 80/85 racing career and I hade a Yamaha YZ85. These bikes a good but a pain to tune correctly. If do you get YZ85 when tuning it use a combonation of jetting and gearing.
