I ride a 84 cr 250 and I am looking to go to a four stoke I what to ride a xr 400 but I am not to sure yet. I am afraid it might be to much power for me Does anyone know what the differce in torque would be between the two

The XR400 makes very good torque at low rpm, but any modern 250 MX bike makes way more power on top. Even your '84 CR250 (if it is running like it should) probably has more top end hp than a stock XR400. The 400 also is pretty heavy compared to your bike. It's a good trail bike if you like low end power and don't mind the weight.

THe XR400 is a VERY friendly 4stroke...it does have good amounts of power but is quit managable. Plus the 400 is bulletproof and will last forever!

The CR-250 will smoke a XR400 in a straight fireroad run it has approx 13 more HP and almost equal torque.
Now which is a better trail bike? The XR. (some may argue wrong if the CR is equipped with a Flywheel weight etc)
Which is a better MX and Trail Bike? The CR (by far)
Which is a better dunes bike? The CR (you have the power on tap)
The XR400 is all about Torque not HP.
The CRF250X will give a 400XR a run for it's money but, add in a 250CR and its then about HP.
The CR has decent Torque to boot.
I have an XR250 and it will get smoked by a CR-125 but, I also have a CR-250 when I need that Big Grin Factor

I have ridden a 96 xr 400 and I have a 97 cr250. Depending on how you ride both bikes will work. If you do more trail riding and you spend more time at slower speeds the 400 will be a better ride and the 400 can do sand, whoops, and jumps ok. But if you ride like I do and spend more time at tracks, sand, and jumping the cr 250 is better. Both are very durable bikes.
