What to look for on a used crf450

I have finally decided to trade in my xr400 after 3 years of riding it. I want something that is more agressive and powerful for the riding that i do. I hate to give up the reliability that i've had with my xr, but i cant afford the 450x. What i was wondering is what do i look for in the crf450's. I wanna get a 2003 or 2004 but i only have about $4500 to spend, so i think its gonna have to be a 2003 unless i can find a smokin deal on an 04. What kind of things should i consider with an 03, was it a good year for them, will i be working on it more than i can ride it if im doing trail riding and dunes? When i go to look at them what specific questions should i ask, what should i steer away from? I know i asked a lot but i gotta know all the facts before i commit to a machine like that. Thanks for the help in advance.

I am looking fro a CRF as well and from my research the '02 CRF was a great bike and they got better with each year. Apparently, the most dramatic changes are from 02->03 and 04->05 so an 03 would be a better option than an 02.

The real gotcha on the CRF is just to make sure it was well maintained. Valves checked and replaced if needed. Airbox/filter cleaned with no leaks(02 issue mainly).

In Utah, I see 04s in the $4,500-5K range regularly (saw one for $4,200 the other day). The 03s are in the $3,500(rare)-$4K range. I am personally looking for a clean 03 but would be thrilled to find an 04 for $4k

BTW I am not sure what kind of riding you do specifically but this bike is a handful in TST if you don't modify it or at least put a rekluse on it. You could get hurt on it real fast. In wide open desert it's great and on the track of course.

good luck

Id love a crf400....If there was such a thing. Im an absolute power junkie in a fields, open riding, but when it comes to the woods, gncc or HareandHounds they are a beast and will get you hurt and hurt fast.

Maybe see if you can pick up the march 2005 issue of Dirt Rider. It has a article about buying used bikes and what too look for on them to see if their in good shape.

Yeah thats good advise....offroad.co has/ had a good article too. Check that
