First off, i have never ridden a dirt bike before. My friends have been doing it for a few years now and I've always wanted to get into it.
I do not care what brand, honda and yamaha are a 5 min. drive from my place. Suzuki and Kawasaki are an hour, but it doesnt make a difference.
1) your physical size: 6'3" 145 pounds
2) How physical / aggressive are you: like going fast, dont really wimp out.
3) what do you plan to ride: I plan on riding with friends at first. That would be anywhere from a field, gravel pit, woods, maybe eventually race
4) Do you have any riding experience: none
5) Do you think you will race: maybe
6) Are you mechanically inclined and will you be doing your own bike work: i know a little bit, basic maintenance.
7) Do YOU have a preferance to a brand/ motor choice: nope.
8) Do you have a dealer close by your home that you might use and what brand(s) does he carry: Kawasaki, Suzuki, Honda, Yamaha
9) How much do you plan to spend on a bike: up to 5000-6000
I'm just wondering how much i should spend on a first bike, since i would be learning, and what size of motor would be good.
All input is much appreciated

What sort of bikes are your friends on? If you plan on doing the MX thing, a 250 four-stroke would do the trick (CRF, RMZ, YZF or KXF). If you're strictly offroad riding, I think a KDX200 might work, but you're pretty tall. Maybe a KTM (not sure what displacement) EXC would work. Do you have a KTM dealership anywhere near you? Get one of your friends to go to a dealership with you and test out some bikes. How old are you?

I am 17
I know that one of my friends is on a KX250. The dealer for Suzuki and Kawasaki is about an hour away and the dealer for Honda and Yamaha is 5 minutes down the road. But as far as KTM goes, the closest dealer is at least 3 1/2 hours away..
As far as MX, maybe in the future. I would want a bike to jump with once I got to that level, not concerned with that at all though. I would ride trails once in awhile.

Also, 2 stroke or 4 stroke? I know that a 2 stroke has more power off the line.. my friends have 2 strokes, but said i should start on a 4 stroke... Any opinions?

2 strokes are easier to do repairs, I.E. top ends and such. 2 strokes are generally easier to work on, and that might be a good thing for you because your new. But there making some fast 4 strokers now, so its a toss up. Im sure someone else here will give you better information ha..

thanks for the info people! A 2 stroke seems more likely to get for what type of riding i would be doing..But, I dunno...Any more input?

Yamaha: TTR230 or YZ250F
Honda: XR250R, CRF230, or a CRF250X
The TTR230 or XR250R, CRF230 should be relatively trouble free, bullet proof bikes to learn on and even learn the basics of jumping on. They will be great for woods, trails, fields and you can still have fun in the pits. If you really want to rip in the gravel pit or hit an MX track, you will find them lacking in power, zip, and suspension...that is when you'd want the newer, higher tech 4stroke like the CRF250X or YZ250F. My suggestion would be to buy one of those (TTR230 or XR250R, CRF230) to start with and then trade up in a couple years.
