First dirt bike - Trails, woods, some desert

I am looking to getting into riding. I have access to a "buddy bike" for now, but it will be sold in the near future.
I am completely novice on dirt, I have only gone on a couple small outings most of which were on a Trail 110. I have ridden on the street for a number of years, but I am not racer or expert.
I am 5'6" and 170 lbs, so light weight 2-strokes appeal to me, but the riding I will most commonly be doing will favor 4 strokes. I don't plan on racing, and getting air sounds fun, but I don't see myself getting into freestyle. I have the ability to work on things, but don't want a bike that requires heavy maintenance. My budget is low...I can't spend more than about $1800 for a bike. I have looked at KDX, KLX, XR, WR, TTR and DRs. I don't know which are taller, which are dogs to stay away from. Help me out, I am getting amped, but can't find a bike.

Look into a used KDX 200 if you plan on riding in the woods and little jumps. I have heard alot of people reccomend them for beginners since they are such a good bike.

Since you are in California be sure the bike is stickered so you can ride it where and when you want.

I am seriously thinking about a KDX 200. The only hesitation that I have is that I may want to get something that has a CA plate so I can ride the highway between trails. I have seen people recommending XR250, how is their power? I have ridden an old XR 350 that had enough juice for me, but it was too old for me to want to buy. Thanks for all recommendations.

Hey, I just found a '95 XR250L in my local paper, what is the thoughts on this year and bike. I have read enough to feel confident that the 250 is a good starter bike, and there are lots of things one can do to them. Is $1500 a good deal if it is in good condition? What is the difference between the L and the R?

my friend rides a KDX200 2 stroke and he's 16 yrs old. it was his dad's bike. haha it was great. when his dad had it (family friends) he unloaded it from the trailer and was ripping down the trail saw a deer right in front of him and he cranked the wheel and dumped the bike. he wasnt riding it more than 5 minutes. so now he has a yamaha big bear atv. and my friend has the kdx200. he likes it, he says its kinda heavy though. pretty much everyone around my house (like a 300 yard radius) has either an atv or dirtbike or both. my neighbour, himself rides a YZ450, his daughters rides kawi 80's or 100's 2 strokes. my dad owns but does not ride (because of a blown rear tire) has a 1972 Honda XL175 enduro bike. one kid has a 02 KX125 2 stroke, one has a KX250 2 stroke,a girl that goes to my school rides a 100 of some kind. and a YZ85. and there is some bikes i cant remember,

I believe L means its street legal. From what Ive seen thats a good price...

From what I understand, yes the L is a street legal version. I also am under the impression that (here in CA anyways) it is quite a bit heavier and slower because of emissions. There is a website that tells all things that need to be done to bring them up to par with the XR250R, but it looks like quite a bit of work($). And the bike was never licensed in CA even thought it was equipped to do so, I am not sure if I would be able to have it done. Anybody know the scoop on this?
