is there much power differance between the two?? what are some pros and cons of them?? is there a difference in seat height?? im 5'9 and thinking about getting a bike! what would be better for me? mainly trail riding and feilds and sand is what i ride

In any type of sand riding go with the 250.

The CR250 and CR125 offer up about the same seat height.
The power is a big difference as the 250 walks all over a 125.
General maintenance is the same but, service life for a weekend warrior is far better for the 250 then the 125.
Bottom ends last allot longer on a 250 also.
If the 250 is a lil to much hit simply tame the hit with a Flywheel weight from like Steahly.
Bottom line get a 250

would i be able to fit on a 250?? im only 5'9 and i weigh around 125 lbs

i know it wont be too much power cuz i drive a ds 650 rigth now

I am only 5'6" so you got me in height and I ride a CR-250.
Of course you are on the light side in weight compared to me but, I happen to be 37 and 180. (marriage, kids stress, add up) LOL.
I am a lil stocky kinda guy.
The height for you is not a problem the power factor might be depending on how good of throttle control you have and exsperience riding.
The bikes are close in weight by maybe 13 lbs so thats not dramatic either.
I highly suggest a flywhell weight on the 250 if you have never ridden one. It helps a ton. It adds weight keeping the bike from revving so fast and adds inertia to the engine to keep it from stalling if you putting around.
Comparing a quad to a to a dirtbike is tough.
An average 125 puts out around 30 HP the average 250 puts out about 45 hp.
To put it into perspective the CRF250X Honda only puts out about 27hp and the CRF250R puts out about 32 hp.
So in 4 strokes the 250 2 stroke will run with a 450 4 stroke.
Not sure if this helps but I tried.

My tips of my toes touch ground with my Alpinestars on.

the sand is mostly a giant pit covered in sand

Posted by: 02crf450---------------------

250 is basicaly the same size as a 125. Just more power.

Posted by: sick 96 250---------------------

The power between the two is huge. The 125 you have to always be on the pipe to get it to scream, the 250 isn;t as much on the pipe but when you get on it, you will be in for a ride. If this is your first bike the 125 is prob your best bet but if you think you can handle a 250 more power to ya. The 250 would be a lot better for sand but like I said it had a nice hitting powerband which can really catch ya off guard. If you can fit on a 125 then you can fit on the 250 also. See if you can ride one first and then decide. Good Luck

i am 5'9. would i fit on a 125 or a 250?

Posted by: sick 96 250---------------------

yeah, i'm 5'9 and i fit, i think i was about 5'5 when i first got on my 125, maybe even smaller

Posted by: highflyernick---------------------

I'm 5'9 and 160, I ride a KX250.

Posted by: dirt_bike890---------------------

can you touch the ground easily?? does the suspension sag much when you sit on it? i only wiegh about 125 and i wont be able to compress the suspennsion very much

Posted by: mtk---------------------

At 125, you'll be too light for the stock springs. So you'll have to put new springs in both ends. Contrary to popular myth, this isn't the end of the world. Unless you weigh 160, you'll have to respring any full-size dirt bike. So plan on new springs for each and (about $100 per end) and don't worry about it.

Buying a bike based upon which is sprung properly for you from the factory is bass ackwards.

Posted by: dirt_bike890---------------------

too light for the stock springs?? what do you mean??

Posted by: sick 96 250---------------------

Means you have to eat some more

Posted by: dirt_bike890---------------------

ok will do

Posted by: 83MX80---------------------

im 5' 6" weigh like 150lbs. and i sat on a friends can am 250 2 stroke and it fit me perfectly. i held a 2002 kawi KX125 2 stroke last year and it was like that perfect height for me. the seat was right beside my waist.

Posted by: mtk---------------------

Most bikes, stock, are sprung for roughly a 160lb rider. At 125lb, you're not heavy enough for the stock springs. You'll need softer springs on the bike.

i found a 1983 rm 125 that is 450 canadian. it needs a first gear and just cosmetic stuff. is that a good deal?? is it hard to put first gear in it??

Posted by: mtk---------------------

The technical term for that bike is "roach." Or "rat" if you prefer.

Replacing first gear requires a total engine teardown.

Cosmetics are nearly impossible to get as many of the parts are discontinued. Don't even think aftermarket.

If it was free, maybe. But not if I had to pay for it as that bike is worth about $450 if it runs, which this one does not.

Posted by: dirt_bike890---------------------

we went to look at it tonight but i decided not to get it and wait for something better to come up! ohh well.

Posted by: dirt_bike890---------------------

About 50% more for the 250, give or take a bit.

I think I basically answered that in the beginning of the thread
