2 minute rule out??

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I didn't catch the webcast last night but Spider said that Reed was having troube on the line and they held longer then 2 minutes for him. Is this a rule change or an exception to make sure the favorites are in the main? I hate to see the rule dropped- could result in half hour delays while motors get pulled and changed out.
Anybody know the full story

The webcast crew sent a correspondant straight to talk to Whitelock, he said flat track was the only place the 2 minute rule was still in effect. News to me.

Its news to me too

i wonder if he would have felt the same way about the rule"or lack there of" if it were a 3didget midget out there with a problem...

i was told that there is no time rule in sx. i don't mind as long as everyone gets treated the same.

I don't think everyone would have been given the extra 3+ minutes they gave the defending champion!

From what they said on the webcast, as the 2 minute board went sideways, Chad's team came over to help him, as his bike wasn't running well on the parade lap. They popped the pipe and fixed the powervalve. It took at least 5 minutes before he was ready. I'm sure most of the riders and the audience had no idea what was going on.

I know lots of fans came there to see Chad, but IMO if you are not ready to race when your race is ready to go, you are SOL. That should apply if you are Johnny First Time Racer or Chad Reed.

the announcer at the race was justifying the time they gave reed.. i wasnt really listening at the time, but i think i heard him say something like "the 2 minute rule doesnt apply right now because of whatever whatever reason" .. so.. thats at least what they were saying over the PA...

i think its kinda bogus too.. but to be honest, im glad they did it.. race wouldnt have been as fun to watch without reed, not to mention it wouldve sealed RC's championship for sure. the crowd at the stadium cheered when they announced they were going to give reed as long as he needed. when it was all said and done, it was probably less than 5 minutes that they spent on his bike before they pushed it back to the line. initially they were announcing Reed couldnt get it started (this was after the parade lap just seconds earlier).. they said over the PA it looked like his PV linkage came undone (this was after they pulled the pipe off and swapped it out w/another).

If the rule says 2 minutes he should be deducted 10 points or something, you cant bend the rules because it makes for better racing, as much as i like reed we need to see fairness.

I heard that after Whitlock gave that answer, he was seen in the corner, licking his index finger and thumbing through the rulebook.

Damn unreliable Yamaha's anyway....

The real issue, IMO....is what the hell is up with Team Yamaha? Seriously. They were sloppy with the fuel (which cost all riders points) a few years back, and now a powervalve? A powervalve? These guys throw thousands at porting, and a powervalve falls apart.

we all make mistakes lol-how many you killed neph???

Posted by: Okiewan---------------------

How many contracts do you think Neph has turning wrenches for a Champion?

Posted by: marcusgunby---------------------

None but most docs have killed a good few patients over the years-occupational hazard i guess

Here's the online 2005 rulebook for Pro-Am down, if I read it correctly: http://www.ama-cycle.org/rulebooks/AmateurRules2005.pdf

Page 14, #6 under "Race Rules". Not sure if this pertains to the pros or not. I'm sure someone would have filed a protest by now if it did. Then again, maybe everyone was cool with welcoming the competition after a reasobably short delay. I've been in a scenario where I've held the gate to the last second for a competitor that we even helped fix his bike between motos. That's the spirit of the sport. I now, big money, paid to win, blah blah blah. Save it.

Apparently, the pros have a different rulebook
http://www.amaproracing.com/rulebook/05mxrules.pdf
page 31, number 6 and page 32 number 3a is the closest I can find about it. There is nothing in the document about 2 minutes.
