450 gears?

why do the 450's have 4 gears? that doesnt make sense to me?

There's just a larger gap between the gears. The final drive ratio is almost the same. It also saves weight.

honda still has 5-speed in their crf450r - but then i typically use only 2 on any given day with an occasional use of a 3rd gear. my shift pattern looks like 2-3-2-3-2-3-2-3-2 with an occasional 4 thrown in briefly. i only ever use 5th for low rpm runs back to the truck when low on gas - thats what honda intended - right?

What i think is that the company's main purpose was to build the best track bike you could buy.So for that reason,in reality how many times are you really in 4th,5th or 6th on the track.I spend most of my time in 2nd,3rd and occasionally 4th,and my bike has six gears.Well actually it came with four but the previous owner installed a 6 speed tranny.KTM 520sx woo hoo
