Barkbusters?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Does anyone know of some type of barkbuster type protection that does not require a permanent plug in the end of the bars? I'm looking to use something for one race, and I don't want something permamanet in case I decide that I don't want to race another scramble. Thanks for any info.

What brand are you using? All the ones I've ever had can be easily removed.

I think he may be talking about having holes in the end of his grips when he removes them.

I have never seen anything on the market like this that could offer the total protection that solid ends have.

Anyone else ??

Thanks. Just not wanting inserts stuck in my Renthals in case I never do another woods race.

The inserts come right out, they're not a permanent addition.

No handguards exist without something going into the ends of the bars. The only way to do that would require parts so rigid they'd weigh a ton and be serious impalement hazards.

Agreed on the inserts for the 'barkbuster' style guards that I've owned. They are not permanent and all parts can be fished out if you remove the guards. A set of new grips and you would never know they were on.

FWIW, Kawasaki KDXs come with 'brush guards' that do not mount to the bar end. They are plastic only and attach to the lever perches. They offer less protection than a barkbuster type of metal framed handguard.

I think UFO (and maybe others?) sells a similar guard to the stock KDX piece. You will see MX racers using this type of guard for roost and mud protection. No metal frame, does not mount to the bar end.

I watched a fella install a set of these on day. The insert was a two piece type design, but the ends were tapered, and he drove them into the bar ends with a big hammer. Those rascals were not coming out................lol
Maybe he had some funky bars or something, but that is where I got the idea that they were not removable from the bar ends. Thanks for the clarification.

Some of them come with the two pieces that fit together, but they should be fairly loose when you install them. The diameter increases as you tighten down the barkbusters to them.. I'm not sure what he was doing. I actually prefer the ones that come with a little piece of rubber hose, a bolt and a nut that compresses the rubber tube. I think they tend to stay tight better and they are also easy to install. Like everyone else said they should just come right out if you decide you don't want to continue using them.

His inserts must have been too big for the bars, cause even after he hammered them into the bar ends, they stuck out about 1/8 inch.

He had the wrong inserts. Hammers are not required to install the handguards.

Cycra ProBends are available with aluminum or rubber bar ends, depending on the bars you mount them on. I used Renthal TwinWalls, so I had to use the rubber ones. Regular 7/8" Renthals use the aluminum ones. Either version should be no problem to remove when you're done.

i hammer mine to get them in. i always tighten the 2-piece slide a little bit to where i have to tap it in with a hammer. makes it easier to tighten.
as far as the original question goes: i remember seeing something in my dirtrider a year or so ago. it was a mx-type roostguard with a metal spine down the middle. sounds like exactly what you're looking for. www.dirtrider.com do a little fishin around and you can pobably find them.
now what you really want are EMIG RACING triple clamps w/ the handguard mount. best handguard system i've ever seen. imo

Posted by: Ryno149---------------------

ok, i couldnt find the handguards on the website. i'll do some diggin around in my old mags and see if i can find them for ya'

Grips are cheap... I don't see the problem...
