CRF 230F Sweet?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I'm new to the dirt bike realm and I was wondering a few things. I live in a pretty 'hick' area and everyone of 'em talks about how awesome their 2-stroke 125s are. I had just got a 2005 CRF 230F for Christmas and as I see it, it is a pretty nice bike. All the rednecks keep telling me that they would smoke me in a race but I have seen my dad, who is a very good rider, just out run anything he is put up against on this bike. Now I'm trying to hold true to the "rider not the bike" mentality but I was wondering what you alll think...Is the 230F a nice four-stroke bike or are the 2-strokes stil gonna kil me in a race. Someone also told me that nowadays the 4-stroke 250s are taking over the circuit that was poreviously ruled by the 2-stroke 125s. Any help would be appreciated!

sry to break it to ya, but im almost positive you would get smoked in a race. Im guessing its a drag race? However if its a tight trails race the 230 stands a pretty good chance of winning.

Yup. If your dad's smoking 125 2strokes on a 230F, I am assuming that they are either really bad riders or it is lot's of tight stuff or technical stuff and your dad is a significantly better rider. A 125 would smoke a 230 in a drag / field race for sure given 2 riders of similar ability. Same thing for an MX track, b/c a 230 is just not made for big jumping. That said, a 230F is a sweet bike....for the right person and purpose. It's a fine bike for riding trails and for beginners.

the 230f is a trail bike, not an mx bike. Therefore the only chance you would have of beating a 125 is in tight trail. Other than that the 125 will beat you flat out.

Now a 250f is a whole nother story. It COULD beat a 125 in everything, depending on rider (a very big advantage over the 125 in trails and could keep up with one on the track. As far as open fields i dont know.

btw would a 250f stand a chance in an open field?

Posted by: SpeedyManiac---------------------

Yes. Ever watch the start of a 125 class race? 250F's always beat the 125 to the first turn.

Posted by: ChopperDave---------------------

The 230f is a good bike, but it depends on the weight of the rider and ability. You didn't mention these, but if you are light and ride well, you will enjoy the bike. If you are the aggressive type, since you talk about sparring with two strokes, you may want to consider something stronger! Can you say CRF250X? I knew you could.

Posted by: t3ch---------------------

Well, the race would be a more trail type race...I am very sure that I would be smoked in a drag race. Anyway, yes my dad is a very good rider, he almost went pro in '88 till he broke his foot. And like I said, this is my first year riding. And the 230 is riding really well and I think it is a really great bike...to at least start out on. But as soon as I get the experience and the money I'm most definantly going for a 250X. Unless I could sell the 230 and get the money for the 250...but that's a different story. Thanks guys for the info!

Yeah, that seems to be the main problem with Honda, they want too stinkin much for their bikes.

yeah thats true. If you think about it your really paying extra for nothing (honda's dont even have as much power as Yamaha's, is what is coming from what i am reading in magazines). I would go with a WR instead of CRF, or maybe a KDX (a really good choice for trail races).

What is this, the blind leading the blind?

Please put up the numbers you are referring to cfrisnotgood... "Hondas" as in all of them, make less power than Yamahas? Aside from the OBVIOUS point that HP numbers alone mean very little when comparing bikes, one example would be the latest numbers "from a magazine" (TWMX, May 05, 450 Dyno results) , the CRF450 makes more power than the YZF450. In fact the Yamaha made the least power of ALL the 450's.

YZF: 44.70
450SX: 46.73
RMZ: 46.87
CRF: 49.49

You might want to consider reading more and posting less. At least, for God's sake, quit making generalized, unsubstantiated statements.

any one know what the horse power readings on the honda crf250r are, and the yami yz250f are?

thanks i appreciate it!

in 250f the yamaha (according to shootouts) is the most powerful of the 250f's. I have heard you have to shortshift the honda to get the most out of it.

Having owned a YZF and ridden Thump's CRF quite a bit (250's) I can tell you if anything, it's the opposite. Of those two bikes, you need to ride the CRF more like a 125.

The 230 is a killer little trail bike. It seems like you are young and were given this bike for christmas? By your parents? I say ride what you have and thank them every day--some of us weren't so fortunate as youngsters and have to make up for it now! Also, that bike should run for a LONG time compared to ANY of the bikes mentioned with significantly less maintenance. Until you're ready to wrench on a race bike, enjoy what you have

THAT is some great advice,

Posted by: ChopperDave---------------------

That is great advice!!! Enjoy the 230, take care of it, and the same folks who blessed you in the first place will help you step up. You said you were new to dirt biking, so you will need some seat time to determine your riding style/preferences. When your are ready, you will be able to make these decisions easier.
