Consider a new bike?

I am currently racing a 2000 RM125, I got the bike about 4-5 monthes ago, and just started racing, the owner before me didnt take care of it at all, so i tried to fix it up nice. My budget is pretty tight, but I've already replaced tires, sprockets, chain, tons of levers, misc bolts, graphics, and i tore it down to rebuild it the other day and the power valve rod wasnt even hooked up, and i needed gaskets, i ordered gaskets today, and am going to try to wing the power valve problem, im not sure what i need.

What I'm wondering, should I save up and get a new bike, or do you think this is a good bike for me untill I learn more?

I'll bite.

Sounds like you're learning a lot right now...about bike maintenance and how to wrench. If you're really going through "...tons of levers," invest in some handguards. Look, everyone has a "beater" bike in his/her past that provides a chance to learn about mechanics and basic riding skills.

Buying a used 125 is a calculated risk, but now that you own it, why not get some good basic skills going on it, at least until your crash ratio goes down. A 2000 model year 125 is about as depreciated as it's going to get, so throw a little love money at it, ride it for a season, and sell it in better shape than you bought it. I'd rather see someone go through a first season on an older bike than risk damaging a shiny new machine. However, it's your call.
