1991 KX500, too old?

I'm looking at a 1991 KX500, the guy says his son races it on weekends, which worries me. Also, I said I might want to trade my 2001 YZ125 for it, which I think is a mistake. Am I right in assuming that this bike is just too old, and not worth the trade?

I have an '89 KX500 that I bought 3 years ago. It was well maintained and in nice shape. I keep up on the maintenance so the bike will last as long as I want it.

What I'm saying is, it's not the age of the bike, it's how it was maintained. If the bike has been beat on mercilessly, and not maintained, then move to another. KX500s are relatively inexpensive. I'd rather have my well maintained '89 than a 2002 that has had the crap ridden out of it.

A 91 is not too old. I do believe that trading the yz125 for that is a bad deal for you. If you get the 91, don't expect not to put any money in it though such as a full rebuild, etc. When you buy old you get to work on it, however, you get a better built and older tech bike

I'm in California. I considered asking the KX500 + $600 for my bike. Is that a good deal?
