Ok, after talking to lots of people i'm pretty much sold on the four stroke front, i've ridden one, i've fallen in love with them, I'm sold on the maintainance thing and i love p!ssing off the neighbours with offensive noise so...

Whats the best one out there, i've read hundreds of mags now that all rate different bikes as the best all rounder so a few more unbiased opinions won't hurt.
which 250f is the best out there at the moment?
reliability, build quality and of course performance??

thanks again.

Every bike has it's plusses and Minuses, it depends on what you want it to do.

Overall, I fell that the bikes are too new to know whats gonna hold up. I'd hate to be setting the valves on my bike every 15 hours.

I believe the CRF250 consistently wins the shootouts. It's only downfall is a weak clutch.

And Valves require replacing more than others.

Any serious racer on any of these 250 bikes will spend some good cash on Clutches and top ends regardless of what you hear. The weekend warrior doing MX or Trail riding will be happy with any of these bikes by following recommended maintence for a long time.

I agree that the CRF is the most notorious shoot-out winner by and large. I personally think that you should do a quick check of the wallet and let it be your guide. From what I have seen the Yamaha's are the most reliable in their current configuration and boasts a $800.00 advantage in my local area. ($5400 versus $6200 OTD) To me even if the Yamaha gives a little away to the Honda in overall, the more reliable package and $800.00 of personalized adds make the Yamaha my overall personal winner.

I think the yamaha will have more power out of the two. CRF's (from what I have read in magazines and forums) require a lot more valve replacing. Dont let my name fool you, its just my name. I dont have anything against honda. I think the yamaha will have more power because thats how all of their other bikes are.

I have heard a lot of bad stuff about the rm-z/kx-f, so i woulnt advise you to get one.

You made that statement in two posts now, as in the other one, I'll ask this question again:

Where did you hear that? The The 05 CRF450 has more power than the 05 YZF450. Which other Yamaha are you talking about?

Let's not forget that the last few seasons the KTM's have had rocket ship motors that left YZ125 motors wanting.

I think he's talking about the Yamaha using a DOHC, which Kawasaki, Suzuki and (I think) KTM all use. Honda is the only one using a single cam.

I really don't think you can pick a bad 250F. I would base my decision more on dealer support and price than which one is winning all the shoot outs. Have fun on your new bike, no matter what colour you get I sure you'll be happy!

Thankyou everyone for your advice.
As always I can rely on the Dirtrider members for some info.

After some careful thinking I've decided to go for an 05crf.
My reasons, well the reviews I've read seem to agree the cr's have four stroke technology nailed and i've always believed that when you want quality you get honda.
Also, here in the UK, practically all privateers are running crf250's and 450's. must be a reason that everyone has opted for them over here.
If you can't beat em, join em...then beat em.

thanks again, i'll keep you posted on how it goes..when i get one.

also,
i can't help but feel that Yamaha may be looking to change there chassis on the four bangers this year or next, they seem a little bit dated now, especially compared to their alloy 2 strokes.

I was talking about the 250f in this forum. About the 450 thing I was talking about the 04's not 05's. I read in a magazine (cant remember which one. It was last year around june.) that the yz450f had more torque and power than the crf, but the crf had better handling. I am thinking it has changed since then because ( according to you and i know your right. the crf had more power than the yzf. So the crf450 has more power than the yzf in 05. It might have more power in 04, but I dont know.) The magazine (i just looked though them and found it) was MXA.
