kDX FOR MY SON

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

My son is a large 12, We just sold his xr 80 and told him if his grades were good Id buy him a new bike..
We sat on the ttr 230 and it fits him fine, 34 inch seat height,But
I just love the ease of maintenance on a 2 stroke, every few years get a new piston and rings and shes as good as new.
Ive ridden some with a guy thats got a 220 and its reputation as a great trail machine is true..
The only problem I can see is the bike may be a little big for him in the begining, within a year Im sure he'll grow right into it.Im in Arizona so the cooling problem concerns me also,
I dont want to have to put Larger radiators on a new bike..
We run a lot of jeep roads and singletrack..Dealer quoted me 5300..00 o.t.d. for a 220...Im sure I can find a better deal than that..Thanx in advance for any input..

I bought a '05 kdx 200 for $3700 out the door.If you buy out of state you wont be charged any sales tax or titleling fees just take a ride.Good choice for a bike though.

Sounds like you are in exactly the spot I was - my boy just turned 12, had outgrown his TTR125, the TTR225 CRF230 were well,, heavy 4 strokes. My boy is about 5'6". I got him a used KDX200. It has worked out perfect for him.

Seat height has not been an issue, but going to a dramatically larger and heavier bike was a transition for him. Plus the power delivery of a 200cc 2 stroke is WAY different than a 125cc mellow 4 stroke. I did add a flywheel weight to smooth out the hit a bit. While the seat height was not a real problem, I did want him to feel more confident about getting his feet solidly on the ground. So I raised forks in the clamps, got a softer rear spring (stock ones from pre 94 were a softer spring rate - found a used one here on DRN), backed the preload off a bit to start with (now that he has gotten used to the bike, I have been slowly bumping up the preload - he wont even know it is different)

Do a search here in the "What Bike do I get" forum ...going back to around January or so - there is a thread I posted with a bunch of questions and replies as i was deciding what bike for my kid. (search by user name KTM Mike - you should find it right away). I got tons of good info!

That price on the 05 sounds way high to me as well.

Sounds like you are on the right track. I'd reccomend the 200 over the 220 as it performs a bit better and is cheeper to upgrade in the future. Also, its legal in the <200cc class which is importaint if he might want to race hare scrambles or enduros in the future. A stock 200 is very docile and easy to controll, no real hit at all, just smooth, clean, linear power all the way. An aftermarket exhaust system livens things up a bit.

enjoy

I havent seen it mentioned but several have said the 200 stays cooler too.
