TIGHT fork seals!

I've done for seals a few times now on different bikes. It was never particularly difficult ---- until yesterday!

Yesterday I tackled the forks of a '75 Yamaha MX400 --- one of them anyway. The retainer clip and seal washer are steel, and had rusted pretty well together. A little penetrating oil and scraping out with a detail scredriver got them removed, but then the fork seal would not budge a bit. Pryed with a screwdriver against the top of the tube, and with a small pry bar, wedging it beneath the seal in the recess there in the inside of the tube. No go! After screwing with it forever I cut the blasted thing out with dykes and pliers, figuring rust from the washer and clip must have worked down and locked it in.

Then cleaned everything with kerosene before reassembling The new seal pushed in almost flush, then just will not go farther! My biggest socket is 32mm, which is a tad small, but not much. It won't drive it in any farther. I quit working on it last night, but went out there today and decided to break down and completely clean the other one, then put them both together at once. For crying out loud, it looks like I won't get this one out short of twisting and cutting it either. I'm sure getting a new seal in will be about what I've got with the other one too.

Any tips or tricks for me?

Thanks!

We were having the same problem the other night on some forks. It seems like the bushing before the seal is all the way in, but it isn't. your gonna have to retap in the bushing
