shock recharge??

i have a 1985 cr 250 and i was adjusting the the rear shock and i accidently unscrewed it to far and it popped off i called rg3 and places like that and they said it just needs to be recahrged meaning it just needs nitrogen in it. but i dont want to take it in so i was going to see what would happend if i just got my air commpressor and filled it through the schowder valve with regular air ? wont that work too?
