alcohol as a solution?

some one told me the other day that if you have a small leak in your dust seal or oil seal you could use alcohol to swell the rubber to help stop the leaking. what would this hurt if anything?

I agree with Lew!
But honestly, I think "most" rubber has the opposite reaction to alcohol - it shrinks. Anyone know for sure??

It will dry the seal out even worse...
The urban myth is to use brake fluid to make a seal swell..
