Anyone from RI here?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: Sandman 2.0---------------------

Just wondering if anyone here is from RI or surrounding NE area. Looking for people to ride with.

Posted by: Okiewan---------------------

Off the top of my head; PapaKeith, Rooster, Squeaky....

Posted by: Papakeith---------------------

Yeah there are a few of us Rhode Islanders on the board. Welcome to the site.
If you get a chance, be sure to check out the Damn Yankee Dirt Rider section of the forum http://www.dirtrider.net/forums3/forumdisplay.php?f=75.
We have a group ride coming up next weekend in PA.

As I'm sure you already know there is no legal public riding space in RI. But there are groups trying to work on that issue. http://www.riohva.org is the one I support

Hi Keith

I met you once down at Gman's track. I've got 2 bikes and no place to ride them I tried contacting RIOHVA but never got an email back. I'd sure love to find a place to ride. Whats going on with the Sterling site? Haven't seen much updated info on the NEDB site lately.

Posted by: Papakeith---------------------

I haven't heard anything about that area in CT. since the ride RIOHVA had there.
The last time I rode past the Johnston Track, there was a for sale sign on the fence surrounding the property.

I've been sticking to the powerlines, 1/4 mile of trail near my house.
Sad that you need to register in MA, or go ride in another state to get any seat time.

Posted by: Sandman 2.0---------------------

I'm over in NP on the smithfield border. You must be pretty close to me being from Johnston. I spoke with your nephew (I think anyway) guy with 250CR. Said he rides power lines sometimes. Those are ok if you live near them...but you can't park a truck. Maybe we can get together sometime...my poor KDX is just gathering a layer of dust. You still riding the CRF? Last year I rode with some guys up in Northern RI last fall, was pretty nice ride. No problems with the locals as it was really remote. Can't believe what RI has come to for the off-road community. When I was a kid in Cumberland, you could ride all the way to wrentham, plainville etc through diamond hill/power lines without any problems at all. Not any more.....

Welcome to the site! Remember what PK said, check out the DYDR Forum for upcoming rides. Rooster and I are leaving Friday night to head down to Paragon for the weekend to meet up with many more of the DYDR's. You should try to make it if you can, you will not be disappointed with the riding!

Posted by: Sandman 2.0---------------------

Thanks Squeaky
I really appreciate the invite but weekends can be tough for me to get away as I'm divorced father of 2 and have my kids on most weekends. I've got most evenings during the week free after work so if any of you guys want to hook up sometime, let me know. I came close to selling it but I changed my mind...figured I tried to make some new friends and get committed to riding again.

Posted by: Papakeith---------------------

After work rides can happen
I'll be away all of next week, and this week is booked solid
Maybe we can schedule a ride on a weeknight for the week after?

Posted by: Sandman 2.0---------------------

Hey keith that sounds great! I'll drag the KDX to the front of the garage and fuel it up

Well...that's all of you then.

Posted by: Sandman 2.0---------------------

Pretty funny green horn...that would explain why no legal riding in RI.......don't know where round rock is but I've been to El Paso a few times on biz....man, according to the locals, you can ride almost anywhere....looks like off road heaven to a small state boy like me.

Posted by: WLKDX---------------------

There are quite a few riders in eastern Ct, and southeast MA. You can find most of them on www.nedirtbikes.com. Me and a couple buddies ride at Pachaug State Forest (Borders R.I.) quite often. The catch is that you need a street registration to ride there. Not that hard to do in Vermont, makes riding a lot easier everywhere and opens the door to enduros, turkey runs.

Posted by: Sandman 2.0---------------------

WLKDX
How do you register a KDX for the street? Are you on the border down near Arcadia or more toward Putnam CT?

Posted by: KDX200RI---------------------

Sandman, just ride the powerlines running from Johnston to North Smithfield. There are many trails and gas lines off the powerline.I'm in Smithfield and ride all these trails.Great trails across from Bryant college on rt. 7.

Those are great and many of us ride them...the problem being it is HIGHLY ILLEGAL. I like to ride the power lines, but I feel better riding somewhere that I know I'm not going to get in trouble and get fined, or worse have my bike confiscated.

Posted by: KDX200RI---------------------

Well good luck Squeaky finding a legal riding area in RI.You can not ride in the park system anymore. So you can go to uxbridge,Ma track or Rt.44 near the Conn. line.Cost $$$ to ride the tracks.

Posted by: Sandman 2.0---------------------

Hey KDX RI

I'm on the Smithfield line but not within riding distance of power lines. Can't park my truck anywhere as you are no doubt aware of how Smithfields finest feel about that. Do you live within riding distance of powerlines? I'll ride em if you have a safe place for me to park the truck. Did you get your bike at Razee or Kawasaki of Putnam? I know up in Northern RI, the police are ok with power lines as long as your not ripping through someones back yard.

Posted by: nectar---------------------

Hey Guys,

I'm in Smithfield by Bryant College...university...anyway Smithfield police are cracking down on riding the powerlines again. Not a problem for me as I'm 2+ wks post op acl surgery, so no riding for me this year. But next year I'm gonna Mass. Reg my bikes to ride Wrentham and Franklin state forest trail systems. I've riden parts of Wrentham and its pretty good...plus its bikes only!, no atv's....

Posted by: Sandman 2.0---------------------

Been thinking the same thing Nectar.

I am quite aware there's no legal riding in RI...register your bike in Massachusetts, you can ride Pittsfield, Franklin, Freetown, there's more than that too...Or join up with RIOHVA as Papakeith said, get involved and help try to get legal riding, it's a long process, but we can get there someday..

As for costing $$$, it doesn't matter where you go, you're going to have to pay for something...whether it be registration or park fees. I lived in the midwest for a year, and in Iowa you could ride 5 state parks but you had to be registered and in Missouri you had to pay to ride in their state parks every time you went. But, if you think about it, the money's going to a good cause to keep these areas open and rideable, it's not like it's just going in some guys pocket. It's worth it to me to spend a little to be able to ride and enjoy my sport, but if you don't feel that way then...that's your prerogative.

Posted by: KDX200RI---------------------

Sandman I bought my 2004 Kdx 200 in Hooksett ,NH. no sales tax in NH.To get on those powerlines you can park in apple valley mall near Chelo's or some people park at the old Ron's pasta hose on rt 116.Oh and Squeaky that sounds like a lot of work I just kick over the bike and head out on the 6 miles of trails I made behind my house.Have fun KDXing this weekend its going to be nice!!

Posted by: squeaky---------------------

If you park in Apple Valley or any of those places, you'll probably get your vehicle towed, ALL places like that say something like "Parking for Customers Only".

Why don't you just go ahead and rent a billboard and advertise that you are riding in a questionable place? Better yet, see if Chelo's might sponsor you this year? I'm sure they just love to hear you fire up your bikes and bother their customers while they are dining. Shoot, ride a wheelie through the parking lot out front to show off your skills. Then, top it off, call the Smithfield Police Department and let them know what time you plan to unload your bikes for the next ride. Maybe another call to the State Police and let them know approximately what time you will be hauling ass down the side of 295 to get to the Johnston exit area? THAT should keep them looking the other way about us riding there.

We have been fortunate with the lack of concern about the riding out there .... please don't attract attention ... I used to live in a state that got completely shut down to ALL legal off road use for almost ten years. We had to do what RIOHVA is just now starting out to do now to get the few areas we have.

Tread lightly, my friend, it takes so very little to shut us down completely. One ticked off person with some clout (and there are PLENTY of those types in this state) can have the hounds of hell on our heels in a matter of moments.

Don't let your selfish attitude about riding ruin it for everyone else here.

Thanks,

Roost

Posted by: KDX200RI---------------------

Hey Roost have good luck with RIOHVA looks likes they are having fun with that 45 acre riding area in Charletown maybe if you smoke a peace pipe with the Indians and have some more steak frys you will get your way.NOT!I have been riding my same trails for 30 years with no problems from my local PD.My neighbor is one and his kid rides to.So maybe some sunday morning you could met us all(and all the jeeps clubs from MA. and RI) For a Kdx ride but I notice you don't have one too bad!

Posted by: Rooster---------------------

Okay, you win. You've got 6 miles of trails and you ride them with "jeeps clubs". What more could a guy want? Oh, I guess the fact that you've been riding the same trails for 30 years puts the icing on the cake!!

Iowa started out with a tiny little Army Corp of Engineers plot of land that was about 32 acres. IOHVA now has several legal riding areas because of the efforts put forth. How many legal areas do you have again? Oh, yeah, none. Give it a chance. I had the same attitude about it as you have, but that was about fifteen years ago. There were legal battles, insurance issues, fund raising problems, you name it. In the end it was all worth it.

So your neighbor is a cop that rides, and his son does too. Doesn't matter, there are people above him, no matter how high his rank. People that don't care about an officer, people that want THEIR way, no matter what, and if that means shutting down other people having fun on dirt bikes, so be it, they will get it done. Trust me, I've seen it, and I come from a very desolate part of the country, a place where there's nothing but corn fields as far as the eye can see .... BUT, one big name doctor, that decided to buy a property, that just happened to be next to a "not so legal" riding area, got it shut down in a matter of days, because he didn't like the noise. DONE.

Meeting you guys would be a blast, but don't worry about me not having a KDX, my WR likes them for traction. Oh, and leave the jeeps out, four wheels are for those who can't balance.

Posted by: Sandman 2.0---------------------

OK, its settled...we are all going to KDXRI's house riding this weekend :-) I'll definately register in mass and join RIOHVA. I don't mind helping out. I've seen the local peace officers nail people parked at ron's. There are a number of grey area ride spots and a lot depends on the particular officer on whether he give you a hard time or not. I'm old enough to remember a time in RI when the only thing they would not tolerate was riding an unregistered vehicle on the street. Being a professional and also a fossil...I'd rather not have any unpleasant run-ins with the authorities. I do thank you all for your comments and didn't mean to start a flame war. Just want to meet new people and ride my bike. Papakieth, I'll have my bike ready whenever you have time to go riding. Be glad to get together with anyone else. Thanks again guys and look forward to meeting you all.
