Head Gasket Leaking?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I have a 2000 KDX 220 and I just recently put a new topend on it, and I put a fredette head gasket on now my radiator fluid is goin somewhere and its not on the ground. The bike is smoking white alot is this the fluid going through the head?

You've probably got a leak between the combustion chamber and water sleeve. I've had head gaskets on cars go that way. They smoke white (steam really), and you can smell anti-freeze in the exhuast. They also run VERY hot in no time, so don't overheat your new top end before it seats in!

This is why the old air cooled engines were so nice to work on.

Will a new headgasket fix the leak in the combustion chamber and water sleeve?

I would think so, just make sure everything is torqued to specs first.

Green Hornet's right. Torque it properly. Set your wrench at about 2/3 spec, tighten criss cross, then set it to spec and do it again.

Green Hornet's right about the air cooled bikes too. I've NEVER had steam problems with any of my old bikes --- unless I rode them into a LAKE! (Don't ask!)

My kdx175 has a copper head gasket. Those can be reconditioned. Heat them blue hot with a torch, then quench them in a bucket of water. Some people here (with fat pockets, I guess) will say to never, never, NEVER reuse gaskets. My experience belies their admonishments. Of course, I'm not racing for points, have no sponsors.
