OK, what do i need to do to run one???

can i get away with running a bike setup for MX with just some handguards? i assume to run a chest protector and a camal back too???

ya id wear a camelbak...handgaurds arent a must but they are very helpful so ya, im sure your bike will be fine.

I would recommend handguards. Also, you'll definitely want a camelback and it's a good idea to turn up the idle if your bike doesn't idle. Also, if your suspension is really stiff for mx you may want to back off the clickers some.

Bruce, you should be fine. Come on out. MX guys usually smoke the out of shape beer drinking off-road guys! I mean come on, the race is nothing more than a glorified off-road parade. Riding 4 laps around an MX track is a lot harder than 2+ hours around some stupid trails that you couldn't even walk over.

Ha ha , just kidding. Gotta get some digs in on the hard core MX guys.

If I were you, I'd buy a second set of handlebars, cut them down and mount hand guards. Keep your current set just like you like them for MX. Chest protector, and camel bak are a must, then go out and just try to finish and not get run over.

Good luck!

Bruce,
A set of hand guards, maybe some tweaking on the clickers, a camelback, and a sixpack will do (the six pack is for after...to numb the pain).

I just bought an 05 YZ 250, and all I put on my bike was hand gaurds and jumped in head first. Starting out you realy just need a bike, and your gear and a lot of endurence. Drink lotrs of water the night before and leading up to the race that day. You can run with a camel back if you want to, I do. Other than that just have fun and be safe.

If the course is known to be rocky, you might consider heavy duty tubes or adding a few pounds of air pressure to prevent flat tires.

As a general rule, good woods suspension will have less high speed compression damping than an MX set-up. Even the fast guys like to be plush on rocks/roots. You might experiment with a little more rebound damping on the shock compared to your MX set up. Unless the course will have a long whoops section, packing will not be a problem.

It's not cheap, but if you really want to make the bike better, put on a steering damper. They are magic offroad, and you might like it for MX, too.

Most of my HS racing has been on stockish mx bikes. Just turn the compression clickers all the way out if its a rocky course, slap on hand guards if its a tight course and wear a camelback. Also, be prepared to pit for fuel once. I usually ran pretty low tire pressures, 10-12psi in rocky stuff, 8-10 in muddy stuff. It seemed to hook up better to me. Never had a flat in dozens of rocky harescrambles, though my rims are a bit worse for wear I also usually carry a small tool pack with a plug, wrench, duct tape, wire ties and pliers just in case. If something goes wrong in a 3 hour race you can usually fix it and still finish up front.
