New Bubba Question

This is an honest ? so please don't turn this into a bubba bash fest.
What was the problem with bubba clearing Laroccos leap at Red Budd? I noticed on my tapes of past events the 2 stroke did not seem to have any trouble with it. Was it bigger this year or was the field plowed to deep for the 2 smoke to get a run at it?

Don't know if it was actually bigger, but word is it was more difficult to get a run at (shorter run up if I recall).

The biggest difference with the leap this year was the landing. There was about a 10 foot smooth landing pad (compared to a much bigger landing area in past years), and lots of guys were overshooting it at first (read: falling out of the sky for a hard flatland). Then riders started backing off, and a few people came up short in the process. In the second practice session on Saturday, Bubba cased it pretty good (like on the second lap) and pulled off the track and went back to the pits holding his wrist. RC had a few ugly landings in practice too with overjumping it.

On another site, Vuillemin once posted about the leap that he rather hit is in 3rd pinned instead of 4th 3/4 throttle, because with 3rd pinned, you are more consistent with your jump, distance, landing, etc. each lap, and with 4th pinned there is more room for variation and timing differences.... that's just another way to think about the challenge of the leap.

I didn't really pay attention to Byrne the whole race, but the majority of the top 20 riders weren't jumping it consistently, and most are guys who have jumped it consistently in years of the past.

The announcers even made a comment that Byrne on the exact same Kaw 250 2-stroke, was clearing it almost every lap. I remember one of the announcers commenting on a previous race, that it sounded like Bubba was over reving the bike. I don't remember the exact quote but to paraphrase they said -- He is over-reving the bike like it was a 125, he would get more out of the 250 if he shifted sooner before it passes the peak of the power.

According to Bailey, the berm preceding the jump was less banked and had deeper soil.
