Is it just me?

…or is the grammar and spelling of some of the younger folks here getting worse? Are they no longer teaching this in school? Maybe I’m just getting old.

Posted by: Green Horn---------------------

Yeah, that's been brought up a few times. I doubt it's gonna change anytime soon. Might as well get used to it.

Too much time in chat rooms...developing a language variant...may soon become part of the required curriculum in the California school systems.

Said by someone in Newjoisy.

Posted by: trakkerman---------------------

I'm not originally from "Joisy"...so please, don't hold it against me.

Posted by: bikepilot---------------------

Also, many now are used to MS word autocorect for spelling/grammar, I know I am and tend to be sloppy with spelling and such, even though most of my work in college and professional work is writing stuff

Hey, Don't give our liberal legislators any ideas. RemeMber Ebonics?

Welcome to the future filled with the tragically hip, the fashionably queer, and the functionally illiterate. McDonald's new signs will say over 1 billion EMPLOYED, because it's a sure bet none of these lazy communication impaired dolts will make it through the interview for any real job.

Posted by: wardy---------------------

Only one problem Rich, by now they are being interviewed by those who understand that instant message dribble.

ya no wat i meen

LOL

Posted by: trakkerman---------------------

Just imagine what that cover letter/resume looks like.

Posted by: TheJunkMan---------------------

Laugh out loud, Oh wait let me spell that right, "LOL", whew almost lost it there.

Posted by: AlaskanRider---------------------

Hey, contrary to popular belief not everyone that's young like me types like that all of the time. But when I'm instant messaging..I use it, when I'm not Instant messaging, I spell correctly and use grammar. And to answer your question. Yes it's getting worse and worse as days go by.

Posted by: ComradeMikhail---------------------

I'm 15 and I like to believe that I use proper spelling and grammar... I use proper spelling, capitalization, and punctuation when I can (although sometimes I am unsure of spelling on a word, and don't bother to look it up). However, you do make a good point. The greater part of the youth (around my age group),from what I see, cannot use proper English, sometimes in school, and DEFINATLY out of school. I don't understand why they would choose to use abbreviations/misspelled words like "u r kewl". Is it that much of an effort to type the extra 2 letters?

I don't know, just my 2 cents.

Just keep thinking that way. Your way ahead of the curve!!

Posted by: Detonator---------------------

Mikhail...did you mean "definitely?"

Just checking...at least you're making an effort. Some people come off 30 I.Q. dumber on paper than they actually are.

Posted by: ComradeMikhail---------------------

Yeah, I did.. Again, like I said, sometimes I don't like to look up the words :P.

In all seriousness though...I agree with you, grammar and spelling is getting worse. And along with that, all sense of self respect? I don't know about you guys, but if I posted something that looked like some of the posts I read on here, I'd be concerned that people will not take me seriously due to my lack of education (of what looks like of a lack of education...).

If I see a thread and the title is grammatically incorrect or there are misspellings, I typically won't even read it.

Posted by: 250girl---------------------

I also agree that the grammar and spelling is getting really bad. I am amazed how many high school students do not even know proper spelling and grammar.I must admit, I do make mistakes, but they are usually due to my inability to type rather than my english skills. Sometimes I wonder what the heck they are teaching in public schools. Are they really teaching anything at all? I have barely any experience with schools, as I am homeschooled. My Mom was very strict about my spelling and grammar. If she saw me getting lazy and making mistakes that I shouldn't, I recieved a sharp slap to the ear. I did go to a public school for part of grade nine, and I was amazed how I could sit in a classroom for two hours and not learn a darn thing. In school, it took two days to learn what my Mom could teach me in twenty minutes at home.

So maybe it isn't lazy teenagers, as much as it is the failure of the public school system.

No it is the fact that they have to teach to the lowest common denominator which leaves the rest of the class bored most of the time.
Until most of these kids learn that they need to be able to speak, read, write, and do math if they ever want to excel beyond the paper hat behind the McDonalds counter

OLDGUY,
wow, I am amazed. For being a moderator, your grammar sure isn't great.First thing I noticed is that lack of a period at the end of your final sentence. The second thing I noticed is the pathetic structure of your second paragraph. The word, "until" made no sense in that sentence. Here is what would have made sense,

Until these kids learn to speak, read, write and do math they will never excel beyond the paper hat behind the McDonalds counter.

OR;

These kids need to learn that they need to be able to speak, read, write and do math if they ever want to excel beyond the paper had behind the McDonalds counter.

PowWow.. Man does that bring back some memories. I think I discovered that around the same time that I discovered Trumpet Winsock.

Yes, technology has nothing to do with it.. There have been idiots long before computers were involved.

Won't happen from me.

Yes the until did not make sense and I saw that after I posted but the kid in me said oh well nobody cares. I blame it more on the fact I am old and slow and definitely do not know how to type (as well as fingers that do not work so well anymore).

You need to give me a break since I at least try

(BTW I never use a period at the end of the last sentence because I am still typing in my mind when I hit submit and my thoughts are still flowing).

ah, I see why when I put 250girl's post through the translator I got that result. I believe it is grammatically correct to put two spaces after a period, unless the rules are different when you are typing Canadian (and they very well could be).

In other words, there's something about glass houses and throwing stones (or was it stone houses and throwing glasses?)

I love you

well, I'll give that to you, but I would think that at least one space should be used, right?

I use eleven, just to be sure.

I have never used a space after a period. I must be dumb. Thank you. Good bye.

"Welcome to the future filled with the tragically hip, the fashionably queer, and the functionally illiterate."

To make matters just that little bit worse, a very well educated English Teacher (from England no less), friend of mine recently told me that text language will soon be a recognised form of communication and will therfore be acceptable in examinations and essay writing?!

She also told me that it is unacceptable to mark down students for using thier local dialect or acccent as this would be politically incorrect.

Oh dear oh dear......

Posted by: a454elk---------------------

I give alot of room before and during a period, I tend to move closer after.

As it was stated earlier. I am used to MS programs and the auto correct feature so I rarely go back over what I just wrote and correct my mistakes, well and I really don't care if I mispelled anything. It's an internet forum not a legal document. But thats just me

If you bothered to actually read the thread, you would see the salient point is not a few words incorrectly typed. No one in their right mind cares about such things in this type of setting. The issue lies with the mouth-breathing drooler set that can't be bothered to even try an communicate properly. These same lunkheads wonder why people don't rush to their aid when they type some gibberish post requesting help on a problem.

Those same communication impaired mutts will one day find themselves working low paying monkey work jobs, because in "real life" employers have little tolerance for that sort of apathetic approach to their jobs and the communication skills most require to accomplish even simple tasks. At some point these text-centric dolts lose what meager communication skills they might have had at one point, and rarely get through an interview as a result.

But I guess the world needs ditch diggers and bus boys to work the midnight shift at the Denny's in Peoria.

BTW, you misspelled "misspelled" as "mispelled".

I like this thread! Oh sorry - i LK dis trd - u giz rool/

Is it just me or are words like "misspelled" just a polite way of saying wrong?!

What's wrong with wrong? If it's written right it's right.... surely. If it's wrong it's just plain wrong.

Misspelled or misspelt seems like a nice way of saying, "Terribly sorry to point this out old chap, but I have a feeling the letters you've chosen to use in that particular sequence may not be entirely correct".

Here's a good comparison: "Dash it all I seem to have missdriven my car into your fence..... "

The room required is directly proportional to the size of the font.

back when I took typing class (and it was still typing class, on typewriters, no less -- the "jitterbug" of word processors), and while I had the lovely Lorien sitting next to me who could type fast enough to do both of our classwork for the day, I learned there should be one space after a comma or a semi-colon, and two spaces after a period and after a colon.

and that's all I know about that, and it's what I learned, and I still do it to this day.

Back when I took typing class (and of course we used hammers and chisels and stone tablets) HA! Beat you guy's to it. That's what I learned. Two spaces after a period.

I still like elks answer though. Arms length is not enough, I prefer the guest house.

Two periods was the way to do it but with the typewriter going the way of antique and more people using computers and laser printers, seeing the end of a sentence with a period and one space has become accepted.

The MLA writing handbook also recommends one space but says there is nothing wrong with two spaces...

http://www.mla.org/style/style_faq/style_faq3

Quote:
Publications in the United States today usually have the same spacing after a punctuation mark as between words on the same line. Since word processors make available the same fonts used by typesetters for printed works, many writers, influenced by the look of typeset publications, now leave only one space after a concluding punctuation mark. In addition, most publishers' guidelines for preparing a manuscript on disk ask authors to type only the spaces that are to appear in print.

Because it is increasingly common for papers and manuscripts to be prepared with a single space after all punctuation marks, this spacing is shown in the examples in the MLA Handbook and the MLA Style Manual. As a practical matter, however, there is nothing wrong with using two spaces after concluding punctuation marks unless an instructor or editor requests that you do otherwise.

You guys just don't know what you are talking about
It's not staying out of arm's reach that you should worry about. It is the FOOT that you should be avoiding at all costs (especially when said foot has a biking boot on it)

The foot is usually much better at hitting the desired target.
