Hey everybody,
My name is Travis and i am 14 years old and I am around 5'8 and weigh 125lbs. I am trying to find the perfect dirt bike.I want speed, reliability, low maintance, and power. All I ask is that i would like to reach the ground and i want it to be semi-cheap.
Please reply with your thoughts.
I thank you in advance.
_Travis_

We'll move ya' to the "What bike?" forum. Just remember opinions are like (*) and everybody has one but only mine matters

crf250r/x, I'm your age, size, and a bit lighter than you, I got a crf250r just recently. You won't be able to touch the ground with both feet flat, but you will be able to touch. Also, at first it will seem like a LOT of bike, assuming you have no previous experience. So you should be very careful first few rides getting good at shifting and all that jazz. I reccomend this bike if you're going to be racing or riding hard, as it just occured to me that you never said what you plan on doing. If you just want something to trail ride with and putter around, well someone else can help you there, because I'm lazy and stuff.

Nah, don't get a heavy four stroke. Get a nice light zippy 2 stroke

Like a yz 125...yes a lot of bike at first...The 125 was my first bike too. I never thought i would ever be able to do donuts on that thing...But you eventually progress and things change.

I don't know where people get the idea that 2 strokes are so much lighter. yz125=189 lbs. yz250f= 206 lbs. cr125=197 lbs. crf250=204.0 lbs. And 4's are lower maintance, but when you have to do motor rebuilds etc. it's more expensive. Another thing to consider: 2stroke's resale values aren't so hot, so if your going with used you'll get a 2 for less, but then not be able to sell it for much, 4 strokes will generally cost more initially used. It all comes down to personal preference.

WEll... your first questions answer is mostly trail riding with a little bit of racing..just among friends...I am just trying to stay at a price around 3 grand and i live in pennyslvania..Also i wanted to ask what you guys thought of the Honda CRF230F?
I thank you guys for all of your help..

If you plan on trail riding and no serious racing, then the CRF230F is a great bike. It is also very reliable while not being a dog on power (though nothing like a race bike). If you want a reliable bike, avoid race bikes (CRxxxR, CRFxxxR, YZ, KX, RM, etc).

Another option would be a Kawasaki KDX200. You should be able to find a late model used one in your price range.

On the used idea, instead of a CRF230F, a Honda XR200R might also work. It was the predecessor to the CRF230F. It's reliable, low seat height and has some pep to it. Suspension is good for trail riding but if you push it, it will bottom.

First off, that is almost 20 lbs difference with the yz125 and yz250f, but they aren't the true weights of those bikes. The yz125 more like 196-199 and yz250f is around 210-220 (I have heard these weights from mag's and people). Second, the 4-strokes are more time consuming and harder to maintain (talking about the new modern racing 4-strokes). Something like the CRF230, xr200 should be reliable and easy to maintain because they aren't racing 4-strokes. I would say the XR's will work good for you.
