hi, tommorow im going to look at a bike that i am interested in buying and i am wondering what i should look for. I know i need to look at the fork seals, and chain, but what else? Any help would be great.

Ask them maintanence questions like how often they cleaned the air filter (every 2-4 rides on trail.), changed tranny oil (2-4 rides.). How often they rode. Tread on tires is a good indicator. Ask them how many hours they have on their top end..Make sure it shifts smoothly through all gears. If the bike is stored outside...I would just walk away right there..When you start up the bike listen for piston slap or any unusual sounds. Ride the bike through all of the gears. There shouldn't be much vibration on the bike.(none that you can feel up to your shoulders.) Also, look for any large dents in the pipe and such. Just look over the bike very carefully..and don't rush into anything.

how can i tell if the motor has problems? Like the piston slapping or something else wrong, i mean i have ridden them before and kinda know but what would the irregulars sounds be like?

When I go to look at a used bike this is how it usally goes. I call and ask what the asking price is so I have a ball park figure to work around. When i get therei say nothing about price untill i see the bike. The bike will either look excelent fair or poor. But looks do not always till if a bike is good to buy or not. Plastics r cheap! I talk to the owner, you can get a feel from talking to him if he cleans the airfilter greases bearings and just does a good keep up of the bike. Then i get on the bike, check all controls check to see if the forks move good see if the back suspention is ok, if its almost locked up the linckage or shock isslef needs work. Then i start it up, see how the motor sounds. Listen for any werid noises, then i go through each gears slowly to check for problems or missing gears. Then i rip on it all the way through the gears to see if there is a problem. Then I go back to the owner go over any problems and let him kno about them. Then i think about the price of the bike price of parts that need to fix the bike and try and get the best deal possibe on the bike. Be firm on the price you want, dont get to excited and buy it if its not really worth it. Also check the brake pads to see how much is left and see if the rotors r still ok.

well, he said the rotors are fine, and he said that he put new pads on the rear. here is the thing, he lives in a city, so im guessing his yard is small, im thinking i may only be able to get up to third gear tops, is this bbad?

the bike is a 2001 kdx220 he is asking $2000 but he told me on the phone he may go to $1600, it is stock excpet for fmf pipe and silencer and comes which stocl pipe and extra rear wheel, should i not get the bike if it is dirty? and are rear shocks expensive to fix? How can i tell if it is broken?

Dirty, lol hence the name "dirt bike" ...a good washing will take care of that. Why do you think the rear suspension is shot?
Posted by: trailrider190---------------------
well, i dont but is there a way to tell if it is? Also since the guy doesnt have enough room for me to ride it very fast, can i shhit through the gears without moving to tell if they are fine?

I would find a way to ride the bike through all gears just to be sure.

Suspention does not lost virtually forever, and can be very expencive to fix. But i'm willing to bet the suspention on ths kdx will be ok, and the prce of 1600 sounds good. You do not need very much room to go through all gears, just put it in first, go a couple of feet then go to second and go a couple of feet and so on. You can easy check all the gears that way. I'm also willing to bet the gears r fine.

If you're really worried, take it to a dealer and get one of their mechanics to look it over. Those mechanics know exactly what to look at. If there's a problem with the bike, they'll usually find it.
