Bubba's impact..

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: weimedog---------------------

Any question on how much it means to have this guy out there making waves...look at this website. He hasn't been riding and the this place has gone dead. Guys like him are great for this sport.

Hurry back Bubba! Attitude and all! Its boring without a firecracker like you out there!

Posted by: nephron---------------------

Well...there's always the Whinedham and the Fonz. Excitement at its best. Don't know where we'd be without 'em.

Bubba's made a huge splash, like him or not. I even find it odd that Windham and RC have become friends this year in the wake of Bubba's appearance. Human behavior, baby. 'Member that stuff? 3 guys go on a trip. Any 2 in the triangle will be angry towards the other at any one time? I think Hannah pulled off one or two of those in his time.

I'm waiting 'til next year when Bubba relaxes, gets his s..t together and it's RC, Bubba and Alessi for the MXdn.

Posted by: steve125---------------------

I thought this thread was about bubbs landing on RC at the dilla. Now that was an impact, he hit his head really hard, hes lucky he wasn't out for a week. OLN had some slow mos of the crash..... brutal!

Posted by: twoofeach---------------------

Of course Bubba is good for the sport. So is MC and Pastrana. I don't really care to see the Patriots win another Super Bowl or the Jankees to win another World Series. I don't mind Armstrong though. Anyway, I think it's bunk the way everyone moves out of RC's way. At least Bubba's pretending to make a race out of it rather than a parade behing RC.

Posted by: 2-Strokes 4-ever---------------------

My son seemed to have a a big future ahead of him in MX. After dominating his class all year, and taking the championship early, at the last race of the year... another rider's risky and foolish move left my son with a career ending knee injury. Two surgerys now, and a third needed. Seems to me Bubba has put stitches in Ricky's finger... MAYBE took out Windham... landed on Ricky. He appears to be a liability to others and himself. If you ask me, this is not what I would think builds championship character. To quote Ricky..."I guess I'll just have to give him more room". Well said.

Yeah he's good for the sport alright... in a "Jerry Springer" kind of way. At least currently.

Dude, do you even ride? Have you ever let someone pass you and then find that they have left you in the dust by about.. oh lets say... 30 or more seconds??? So I guess they "like" parading behind R.C. huh, NOT.

The only thing Bub's is pretending to be is... the fastest man in MX. Which right now he is not.

I am not anti-Bubba and pro R.C. It's just that I have seen the result of a champion(R. Johnson) having been taking out and his career cut short due to the fact. I think it was '89 at Gatorback.

And for all those Hannah this and Hannah that guys... this is different. Nowadays MX racers are REAL athletes. They train their butts off all week long. They are not weekend racers and weekday partiers like back in da day.

I have seen James do things on a bike I have never seen anyone do. Simply amazing and jaw dropping, but... I just think he can do it with out all the j"B.S." that happening right now.

Posted by: marcusgunby---------------------

One thing i notice with bubba, the bigger the bike, the less fluid he looks, the threw the 125 around like it was taking orders direct from his brain, but not so much on the 250, on the 450 he looks very similar to alot of other riders.

Need to see more of him on that 450, but so far I totally agree Marcus. He had a few moments of his old 125 self at the dilla, you need to watch that race.

It doesn't matter if you're Bob Hannah or if you just started watching MX yesterday. The basic principle of a race is to cross the finish line first. If you take that away because the GOAT is on your rear wheel then you might as well give him the trophy after the hot lap. Everyone was complaining about Bubba when he stole Windham's line at Red Bud. RC did the exact same thing to K-dub during the SX season. Maybe Bubba should go race overseas because he doesn't bow down to RC. MX isn't about juice boxes and orange wedges like girls soccer.

If they simply can't ride as fast as R.C. there is nothing they can do about it. Regardless if the basic principle is to finish first. Do you not see that?

Right now R.C. is an enigma to his sport just as Lance Armstrong is to his.

Yes R.C. did do the exact same thing, but the comparison has no validity. For starters, SX is alot tighter than MX. Secondly, it was not something that became a trend to his riding nearly every week as it has with Bubba. And last but not least, Windham never hit the ground.

Personally it was a misjudgement on his part to let Windham by at Red Bud. I was like, wtf is Kawasaki thinking of their star playa now!?

Dude, these guys are pro's. They know eXactly what they are doing. Just consider them surgeons on dirt bikes. Thats how good they are. If no one sees that well... they are not really into MX as they think they are.

I don't want anyone to bow down to R.C. And hey, do NOT forget... he gets paid MILLIONS for what he is doing out there.

I just want him to ride his arse off and let it all come into play. Not force it and make the sport into some sort of thug fest.
Hell they all can do that to each other. That takes no talent at all.

Posted by: TwinSpar---------------------

Bubba sucks!

Bubba is to me as RC is to Pred. LOL

I'm sorry, I don't see things as black and white as you do Mr. MX expert. I don't see other racers let guys by in other forms of racing or in other sports. It's like a pitcher lobbing a baseball to Barry Bonds. It's like they don't want RC to say anything bad about them in his press conference.

Comparing SX to MX has no validity? They are on bikes, there's a track, they twist a throttle, connect the dots.

RC a millionaire? I thought he was buying all that fancy Fox gear with the AMA prize money. Thanks for pointing that one out all knowing one.

I just want everyone to ride their arses off and let the chips fall where they may. If someone's feeling get hurt, payback is a biatch. Watching Fonseca and DV battle it out for the 4th spot every week has become the highlight of the MX season.

Look, I know RC is the man and Bubba's season isn't going quite as expects however, it seems as though people are looking for the bad in him and are ready to blame all the world's problems on Bubba. The next time a car bomb goes off in Bagdad they'll blame Bubba. I just want to see some good clean racing and without Bubba in the mix, all we seem to is the aforementioned DV vs. Fonzi matchup.

Posted by: motoXman2005---------------------

twoofeach, look man... I'm sorry. I did not intend this to be me against you OR a hating Bubba thing. I went back and reread my original post and I thought I made accurate depictions of what is going on. And it still seems we both want the same thing. We just have different ways of voicing our opinions.

Anyway, I'll let it go. I apologize for it getting heated.

Take care

I couldn't agree more. Bubba is the only guy out there mixing it up with RC. He's made some bonehead moves, but who wouldn't err while trying to keep RC's pace? I'm tired of watching RC walk away with motos. Don't get me wrong, I want him to win, but I'd rather see him battle for position all moto than take the checkers 30 seconds before anyone else.
Bubba has so many unbelievable lines that it takes other riders the entire practice session to learn... including RC, CR, K-Dub.

Have you followed the last two races? KW has mixed it up in the last two races with RC. where was bubba?

Posted by: mdkuder---------------------

Bubba, who the hell wants to be called Bubba? James is an awesome rider and will make the transition to the big bikes but it will take some time. His attitude stinks as well, but as with Carmichael he will eventually pull his head out.

Yeah, pretty thoroughly. I even attended the race in Lakewood. I watch the races probably 4 or 5 times each week.
Kevin has ridden his usual pace every race. He doesn't push the edge like Bubba does. Kevin was simply the benefactor of the RC/Bubba incident in Unadilla. He even said that on the podium. Also, K-Dub kept RC's pace for a few laps in Lakewood, but ended up falling off the pace by the halfway mark.
I say these things as if Kevin isn't fast or talented. Trust me, I know he is. He's amazing. He's one of only two guys who have beaten RC straight up in almost 3 years. BUT, Kevin hasn't pushed the limits of his ability to battle with RC like Bubba has done.

Bubba has had his issues (whatever they may be), but at least he BELIEVES he can run with RC.

The last rider I can remember that had that kind of an effect on other riders outdoors was Rick Johnson, the year before he got hurt. Everyone got out of the way of his no.1 plate.

Posted by: weimedog---------------------

I find it interesting that it would be suggested that Hannah and those riders of that era were not "real" atheletes who didn't train!

Things haven't changed as much as those who stroke their ego on being in the "current" era of MX would like to believe. Riding & Training Technics have. Technology has. The raw material and drive that makes a successful racer(athelete) has not!

But the origional premis of this post still stands. It takes personalities like Bubba, Hannah, Rick Johnson, RC, Broc Glover, Doug Henry, MC, etc to get people rooting for and against folks. Without the interest in these personalities you have.....Basket Ball!!!

I've seen K-Dub transform himself into RC's puppet since being anounced as RC's teammate for the MxDn.

As far as Bubba's attitude, you can't compare his antics with even most teenagers in your local communities. He hasn't broken any laws. RC wasn't always as polished as he is now and hopefully Stewart will learn something from listening to his interviews. Myself, I don't really tune in to see a bunch of guys sipping lemonade on a porch swing. So, what some may consider brash, I welcome in the name of competitive fire. It's nice to hear that other people are even remotely interested in winning a race rather than falling in line with RC's pre-race script.

Posted by: dirt bike dave---------------------

I really don't care much about a rider's off the track personality. My enjoyment of the races comes from what the riders do on the track, not how well they handle their PR chores.

I just give all the riders the benefit of the doubt and figure they are all decent enough guys off the track. I would rather the top riders focus on riding, instead of facing the pressure to be great with the public, too.

If the awesome action does not sell the sport, it is not going to be appealing to the masses just because some rider is good with a microphone or fits into an untapped demographic market.

Honestly, I think MX and SX will always be a marginal sport to the American public. Even if every rider was as charismatic as Travis Pastrana (props to him for being a public relations natural), most Americans will just never care.

FWIW, I really do enjoy watching RC. How can watching the greatest be boring? He rides smart, he's got the heart of a lion, and his style has evolved over the years. You will never see another like him, so enjoy it while you can. He'll retire soon enough.

And from what I've heard, Hannah used to train his tail off, alone, early in the morning. Then quite openly lay around the pool all day. He'd make it look like he was not training. Very demoralizing to the guys he'd beat them on Sunday. And I'll bet very very few of the today's riders train as hard as Johnny O'Mara and David Bailey.

Hannah and those guys raced 45-minute motos, not the 35-minutes they now race. Those extra 10 minutes per moto made a big difference, and I doubt many current racers could do it. Athletes, indeed!

Pardon my quote on the whole "Hannah" thing. I realize I may have been out of line.

But if you believe athletes today are not better then althletes from yesteryear, well, there is nothing I can say that would open your eyes.

I'll quit posting because I see how pointless this all is. We all have different views and opinions and really it makes no difference in the end. It just adds to the whole "tabloid" feel of it all.

Take care all, ride hard and ride fast.

I think the training done today is far more advanced than even as few as 5 years ago. However, it's all relative to what everybody else is doing. If everyone trains very hard, than everyone is equal. When Walter Payton was working out during the entire off-season, he had an advantage. Today, most, if not all NFL players, have a year round training schedule. If Hannah and a handful of other guys were training, that may explain at least some of their dominace?
