im looking at a 250fs any where from 2002 to 2004
What are the strong points over these models
What would be the better buy (mostly talking around a 2003)
Im looking for somthing that has a hard hitting powerband over a real smooth one
So far (unfourtonantly) im leaning towards honda folowed by yamaha
If i could get a 2006 bike i would defentenly get the KXF ... But im only 15 and its hard to make that kind of money!!!!!!!!

Thanks

I just wanna make sure i get the right bike... My KX 125 isnt cutting it

if its a 03 model u think u can afford than there is only yamaha 2 choose from as the other brands didnt bring out 4banger mx bikes till 04

i say yz250f or crf250f 04 if u can afford them

03 or newer for Yamaha's. They made some pretty important changes that year-auto decompression, ergonomics, weight.

alrighty thanks
i would rather have a yam because i really dont like hondas ..... Ive never worked on the honda fourstrokes but i have worked on an 03 cr 125 and from what i see the qualitly isnt that good.
But i do like hondas frames

I'd say YZ250F because you don't have a ton of money to spend on rebuilding the others.

You do know that yamaha frames and plastcs are absolute junk, the frame paint strips and rusts and the plastics go white when dropped. And an older 250f will need major engine work.

I have an 01 yz250f, and never needed "major engine work". I replaced the top end one time and have checked the valves (knock on wood). You have to change the oil every other tank of gas and always clean the filter. if you get an 01 or 02, buy a 2003 autodecompresion can and instal it, about $170-$190. I have done that with other mods like the Dr.D hot start and Dr. D dry sump kit.
Big deal about the frame and plastics, that is cosmetic and has nothing to do with the ride. True, I do have worn off paint on my frame with some rust, just hit with some scotchbrite. Most white plastic stress marks will come out with a heat gun put up next to it.
I guess I wont have to worry about that soon once I get my 06 Aluminum framed, Yellow YZ450f.
....
That being said, I would ask questions to the owner of the older 250f's about the motor maintenance and such, Buyer beware on all used items, but more so on these new hi tech thumpers. I have known some incompentent riders that have a hard time cleaning their air filters yet alone due anything serious.
I wouldnt say the Hondas are poor quality either. I am impartial to Yamaha, but the Honda is a bad ass bike as well.

oh yeah, they have said that the yamaha is the more reliable motor out of all of them and the crf needs more attention to it on maintenance. But if you keep on the schedule like any bike, shouldnt be a problem.

zcookie is right on the mark ... they are both good bikes but I bleed blue in the thumper world so I'd say YZF. You can't make a wrong decision unless you are not a maintenance person in which case go Yamaha since it doesn't require as much to live (still needs some though).
